Snorlax: Type, Powers, Strengths, Weaknesses, Evolutions, Moves & More

The world of Pokémon has been a growing phenomenon since 1996, when the first pair of video games came out in stores. Pokémon started off as a video game series and although new creatures are primarily introduced in the video games, the anime series has become as popular as the video games. As of December 2021, there are almost 900 individual Pokémon identified by the PokéDex and in this article, we are going to tell you everything you need to know about one of them – Snorlax.

Snorlax is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I of the core game series. It is the final and only evolution of Munchlax, a Generation III Pokémon, which evolves into Snorlax when the Friendship level is high enough. Snorlax also has a Gigantamax Form. It is weak to Fighting-type moves, immune to Ghost-type movies, and deald and takes normal damage from all other types of moves.

In this article, we are going to tell you all the information you’ll need if you want to breed a Snorlax in any of the games. You’ll find out about its type, its powers, its strengths and weaknesses, its evolutions, and its moves. We’re going to focus on both the core games, as well as other popular video games based on the Pokémon franchise.

Type

Snorlax is a Normal-type Pokémon and one of the best-known characters from the whole franchise; in a way, Snorlax is one of the mascots of the whole franchise. It was first introduced in Generation I of the video games and holds #143 in the National PokéDex.

It is one of the heaviest Pokémon in existence with a weight of 460 kg. He always sleeps and only wakes up to eat. It resembles a bear or a panda. In the episodes of the anime where wild Snorlax are present, they are usually located in the forest. Its power coupled with its impressive ability to take punches thanks to its massive build quickly made it an interesting Pokémon for tacticians in all generations.

Snorlax is potentially inspired by the Totoro monster, from Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro movie, both of which are bear-like creatures who enjoy sleeping. In Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu, and Let’s Go, Eevee, the way the player rides Snorlax, clinging to their belly, is reminiscent of the way the film’s heroines travel with Totoro. In Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu, and Let’s Go, Eevee, Snorlax can be used as a Poké Mount.

Powers and Abilities

  • Thick Fat: The Pokémon is protected by a layer of thick fat, which halves the damage taken from Fire- and Ice-type moves.
  • Gluttony: Makes the Pokémon eat a held Berry when its HP drops to half or less, which is sooner than usual. (Hidden Ability)

Strengths and Weaknesses

As a Normal-type Pokémon, Snorlax is not super effective against any specific type. It is weak against Fighting-type Pokémon and it is immune to Ghost-type moves. It receives normal damage from Normal-, Flying-, Poison-, Ground-, Rock-, Bug-, Steel-, Fire-, Water-, Grass-, Electric-, Psychic-, Ice-, Dragon-, Dark-, Fairy-type Pokémon.

Evolutions

Snorlax is the final and only evolution stage of Munchlax; while Snorlax is a Generation I character, Munchlax was introduced in Generation III of the video games. The evolution is a tricky one, as you need to raise your Friendship level with Munchlax for it to evolve into Snorlax, which can be outright difficult. Snorlax cannot Mega Evolve, but he does have a Gigantamax Form. This Pokémon doesn’t have any known Regional Variants.

In Pokémon GO, Snorlax also evolves from Munchlas. To evolve your Munchlax into Snorlax, you need a total of 50 Munchlax Candy. You cannot further evolve Snorlax in the game yet.

Moves

As of Generation VIII, the movies that Snorlax can learn are:

  • Bold indicates a move that gets STAB when used by Snorlax
  • Italic indicates a move that gets STAB only when used by an evolution of Snorlax
  • Click on the generation numbers at the top to see level-up moves from other generations
  • × indicates a move that cannot be used in Generation VIII
