Solo Leveling is a South Korean novel series that has recently seen an anime adaptation. Arguably the most popular manhwa in the world, Solo Leveling is sure to attract a lot of attention, especially in light of the fact that the anime adaptation is truly great. While we’re enjoying the episodes, we have decided to cover some basic elements from the story, and in this article, we are going to explain the Gates in Solo Leveling. In this article, we are going to explain what Gates are, as well as rank them based on the known ranking system from the series. We are also going to answer some additional questions about them.

What are the Gates in Solo Leveling?

The Gates are one of the most important elements of the Solo Leveling lore and before we actually rank them, we are going to tell you what they are. The Gates started to appear suddenly and are actually special magical portals that connect the real world to the Dungeons. Entering them from the outside is possible, as is exiting them from the inside. They are usually blue in color (although there are special Red Gates as well) and are always a gateway to a Dungeon. Based on their rank (see below), the Gates vary in size, from smaller to larger ones. They can appear anywhere, and there doesn’t seem to be a pattern – sometimes, only one can appear, while at other times, several at a time might appear.

Gate ranking system in Solo Leveling

Gates, like most other elements of the lore of Solo Leveling, are subjected to the standard S-E ranking system, which ranks phenomena from the series based on strength, with S-Ranks being the stronger, and E-Ranks being the weakest. In this section, we are going to rank the known Gates in ascending order:

E-Rank Gates

These are the weakest Gates that are easiest to close. Sadly, the series has not revealed any E-Rank Gate so far.

D-Rank Gates

D-Rank Gates have also not been properly explored in the series, but we assume that the original Double Dungeon Gate was a D-Gate, based on everything. The size of these gates has been defined as being similar to the size of a standard door.

C-Rank Gates

C-Rank Gates have not been explored in the series and we haven’t seen any confirmed C-Rank Gate so far. Initially, the Red Gate was thought to be a C-Rank Gate, but it turned out to be an A-Rank Gate.

B-Rank Gates

B-Rank Gates have not been explored in the series and we haven’t seen any confirmed B-Rank Gate so far.

A-Rank Gates

A-Rank Gates are powerful Gates that hide a lot of Danger; in fact, they are the second-most dangerous Gates in the series. So far, three such Gates have been revealed in the series:

  • Hunters Guild Gate: This top-tier A-Rank Gate opened up below the Hunters Guild, and it was the first A-Rank Gate that Sung Jinwoo cleared by himself. There were Dungeon Jackals and High Orcs there, which made it a respectable A-Rank Gate, but Sung Jinwoo was powerful enough to clear it without any problems whatsoever.
  • Busan Gate: This top-tier A-Rank Gate opened in Busan not long after the Jeju Island Incident. The Knights Guild had cleared all the Gates in Busan save for this one, and due to the immense danger it posed, no one was really volunteering to enter it. Sung Jinwoo accepted at one point, but just as he was about to enter the Gate, he sensed that his sister was in danger, so he left. he released Beru inside the Dungeon, and Beru easily slaughtered all the monsters inside, thereby closing the gate.
  • The Red Gate: Initially thought to be a C-Rank Gate, the Red Gate from the Red Gate Incident turned out to be a dangerous A-Rank Gate that resulted in many casualties, including eight members of the party led by Kim Chul, who were killed by the monsters or the environment; Chul himself was later killed by Sung Jinwoo when he became mad and violent, attacking the lower-ranked Hunters within the Dungeon. In total, 12 Hunters entered the Gate, but only three of them came out alive, which shows just how dangerous this A-Rank Gate actually was. It seems to be the most powerful A-Rank Gate in the series.

S-Rank Gates

As the name suggests, S-Rank Gates are the strongest and most dangerous Gates in the series. They are the gateways to S-Rank Dungeons, which are the toughest Dungeons in the series. Only the strongest Hunters working together are able to deal with S-Rank Gates, whose size can be like that of a hurricane, as the series described it. So far, only three S-Rank Gates have been directly identified in the series:

  • Jeju Island S-Rank Gate: This S-Rank Gate opened up on Jeju Island three or four years prior to the start of the series and saw the appearance of giant Ants as well as their leader, Ant King. It was the first S-Rank Gate seen, and while it did take a lot of lives, mostly Hunters died there, as the world had had some experience with S-Rank Gates at the time. The island was then closed off while the Korean government launched several attempts to close the gate. It wasn’t until Sung Jinwoo accepted the mission to go to Jeju Island that the Ant King was defeated, and the Gate was finally closed permanently.
  • First S-Rank Gate: The first S-Rank Gate ever appeared about eight years prior to the main timeline on the West Coast of the United States. The world had not seen an S-Rank Gate until that moment, so it was a surprising event that resulted in the deaths of millions of civilians and more than a hundred Hunters as Kamish the dragon emerged from the Gate and began its rampage. The Gate was ultimately closed as Kamish was defeated, but it was one of the deadliest events in the history of the series, so we assume that it was chaotic back then.
  • Tokyo S-Rank Gate: This S-Rank Gate opened suddenly in Tokyo and at just the “right” moment when Japan’s Hunter force was decimated after another raid on Jeju Island. Giants were the main monsters that emerged from this Gate, while the boss was Legia. Again, millions of civilians died, and it wasn’t until Sung Jinwoo came and cleared it that the danger was over. One giant even managed to escape but was killed as he went to China.

How and when are Gates closed in Solo Leveling?

As for how Gates are closed, a topic with which we are going to end this article, we can confirm that a Gate in Solo Leveling is closed once the final boss is defeated. Sometimes, it might be difficult to find and defeat the final boss, which leaves the Gate open even after many opponents have been defeated. But, yes, that is the only way to close off a Gate.
