Sony’s Spider-Man Universe began with grand intentions, aiming to assemble the crucial supporting characters from the Spider-Verse. However, they overlooked a crucial aspect: Spider-Man himself.

With several films already released, the SSU has faced its share of failures, with the latest disappointment being ‘Madame Web.’ The female-led superhero film was heavily criticized by critics and failed to recoup its investment. Despite this setback, recent reports indicate that Sony is forging ahead with the SSU, with several new projects currently in development.

The year 2023 got off to a rocky start, but there’s still hope for the studio’s redemption with the upcoming releases of ‘Kraven the Hunter’ and ‘Venom: The Last Dance.’ ‘Kraven the Hunter’ was recently pushed back to December 13, after initially being slated for release on January 13, 2023, then rescheduled for October 6, 2023, and later August 30, 2024.

However, the latest delay has nothing to do with the film’s development or the SAG-AFTRA strike. In an interview with Collider, the movie’s producer, Matt Tolmach, explained that the decision to move the film to Christmas time was driven by the studio’s confidence in its potential success. They wanted to ensure that audiences have plenty of opportunities to see it in theaters and potentially watch it multiple times.

Kraven moved to Christmas because we’re excited about it and Christmas is the best release period there is, when you get people with time to go back to the movies over and over again. hat was a real reflection of how the studio felt about the movie. We’re really excited. But that’s a great move that reflects just the feeling about the movie.

Sony’s confidence in ‘Kraven the Hunter’ as a potential blockbuster is evident, but with little information available about the film, it’s challenging to make definitive judgments. Drawing from our experiences with the SSU, our optimism doesn’t quite match Sony’s.

While the upcoming movie is expected to be rated “R,” the exact storyline it will adapt remains uncertain. In August 2018, Richard Wenk, known for his work on ‘The Equalizer 2,’ was brought on board to write the screenplay for a Kraven the Hunter film. The project was conceived as part of Sony’s shared universe plans, aiming to introduce Kraven to audiences and explore potential hunting targets, considering Spider-Man’s absence due to the MCU deal.

The film’s intended audience would be gauged by assessing the reception to the darker tone of ‘Venom.’ Wenk’s goal was to remain faithful to the character’s comic book roots, which might involve depicting a confrontation between Kraven and Spider-Man. He also hinted at the possibility of adapting the ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’ storyline, either in this film or in a subsequent installment, drawing parallels to the structure of ‘Kill Bill.’
