‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is About to Claim Its Spot Among the Three Biggest Movies Ever Made

Superhero fatigue has been a popular talking point in Hollywood for years now, with box office analysts constantly debating whether audiences have simply seen too many capes and masks. Every few months, another franchise entry either confirms or complicates that theory, and this fall has delivered one of the more dramatic rebuttals yet.

Tom Holland’s latest outing as the web-slinger has spent the better part of a month proving that theory wrong in emphatic fashion, refusing to slow down no matter what new competition rolls into theaters.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ is now tracking to remain the number one movie both domestically and globally for a fifth consecutive weekend, with projections pointing to an additional $23 million to $26 million in North America and $45 million to $50 million overseas. That kind of haul would be enough to push the film into position as the third-biggest movie ever made worldwide.

The film’s numbers back up just how dominant this run has been. After opening to a record-setting $355 million domestically and $932 million globally, the film has already generated over $855 million in North America and more than $2.22 billion worldwide, according to Variety’s reporting on its fourth-weekend performance.

Domestically, ‘Brand New Day’ currently ranks as the third-highest grossing release in North American history, trailing only 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $858 million and 2015’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ at $936 million. With its current pace showing no real signs of slowing, the film is positioned to eventually overtake ‘The Force Awakens’ as the all-time domestic box office champion, and it could even become the first movie ever to cross $1 billion within North America alone.

Worldwide, the film’s trajectory is just as staggering. Sitting behind only 2009’s ‘Avatar’ at $2.9 billion and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $2.7 billion, ‘Brand New Day’ has already surpassed 2022’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ to become the third-highest grossing movie in history on a global scale.

The film also posted the second-best second weekend of all time with $145 million domestically, trailing only ‘The Force Awakens’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in that specific category, and later delivered the second-best third weekend ever recorded at the North American box office. Only a handful of films throughout cinema history have managed to sustain this level of consistency across so many consecutive weekends.

Much of that staying power comes down to a fairly thin field of new competition, though Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has remained a steady presence in second place throughout the run, recently becoming Imax’s highest-grossing release of all time by surpassing ‘Avatar’s’ lifetime Imax haul. Even so, nothing released this fall has come close to disrupting Spidey’s grip on the top spot.

With another dominant weekend on the horizon, ‘Brand New Day’ isn’t just having a great late-summer run, it’s actively rewriting where this film lands in the record books. Whether it eventually catches ‘Avengers: Endgame’ or ‘Avatar’ remains to be seen, but for now, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is proving he can still fill theaters like almost nothing else in Hollywood.
