‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Racing Toward the Biggest Domestic Box Office Record
Spider-Man: Brand New Day may be getting deeper into its theatrical run, but Tom Holland’s latest adventure is showing almost no sign of slowing down. Most summer blockbusters begin losing steam once September arrives, but this movie has managed to stay on top of the domestic box office for six straight weekends. Now, it is getting dangerously close to taking one of the biggest box office records in movie history.
According to the box office figures and industry projections included in the report, Brand New Day has already earned around $925 million in North America. That puts it only about $11 million away from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which has held the domestic record since 2015 with $936.6 million. Current estimates suggest Spider-Man could finish somewhere between $950 million and $960 million, which would be enough to take the record without adjusting for inflation.
What makes the run even more surprising is how well the movie has performed this late in its release. The film was still able to make about $1.5 million during its sixth Tuesday discount showing. That was a 42.9% drop from the previous Tuesday, which is not exactly a small decline, but it still shows that plenty of people are turning up even after the movie has been in theaters for weeks. The film also lost 158 theaters going into the weekend, making its continued performance even more impressive.

The comparison with Avengers: Endgame makes the situation even more interesting. Brand New Day started out only around $3 million ahead of Endgame at the same point in their runs. Since then, the gap has grown dramatically. The report says Spider-Man is now about $108 million ahead of where Endgame was domestically at the same stage. Considering how huge Endgame was and how long it remained one of the biggest movies ever, that is a pretty wild advantage.
A big reason for the movie’s strong legs appears to be the reaction from audiences. Brand New Day received an A CinemaScore, putting it among the better-reviewed Spider-Man movies when it comes to audience response. It sits alongside films such as Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, while Spider-Man: No Way Home and Into the Spider-Verse remain above it with A+ grades.
The movie has also kept strong numbers on Rotten Tomatoes, with the report listing a 90% Certified Fresh critics score and a 98% audience score. That kind of reaction can make a huge difference once a movie gets past its opening weeks. Instead of relying only on opening-night excitement, a film can keep bringing people in through strong word of mouth. That seems to be exactly what is happening here.
Brand New Day also had an enormous start. Its reported $168 million domestic Friday opening became a major single-day box office milestone. But the bigger story may be what happened afterward. Huge openings are common for superhero movies, but keeping that momentum for more than a month is much harder. The fact that Spider-Man has remained number one for six weekends shows that audiences have continued choosing it over newer movies.
The Force Awakens has now spent more than a decade sitting at the top of the domestic box office. Several major releases have come close, but none have managed to knock it from the number one spot. Brand New Day, however, is now close enough that the record could disappear very soon.
Based on the projections cited in the report, the question is no longer whether Spider-Man has had a huge run. That part is already clear. The real question is how far Tom Holland’s latest movie can go before theaters finally stop filling up. If the current pace continues, Brand New Day could soon turn one of Hollywood’s longest-standing box office records into a piece of history.
