‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Stacking Its Villain Roster to an Almost Absurd Degree, and Fans Are Starting to Worry
Few Marvel films in recent memory have generated as much pre-release chaos as ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ With the film locked in for a July 31, 2026 release, promotional artwork, merchandise sticker sheets, behind-the-scenes footage, and even trailer audio have all found their way online, painting a picture of a movie absolutely packed with villains for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker to deal with. The sheer volume of what has spilled out into the internet has turned every week leading up to release into its own event.
The story picks up in a New York City that no longer remembers Peter Parker exists. Four years have passed since the events of ‘No Way Home,’ and Peter is now an adult living alone after erasing himself and his memories from those he loves, devoting himself wholeheartedly to protecting his city as Spider-Man full-time. It is a deeply personal premise, and one that Marvel apparently cannot keep contained.
What is emerging from all these leaks is a rogue’s gallery unlike anything a solo Spider-Man film has attempted before. According to insider reports, if every confirmed and rumored adversary is counted, the total number of threats in ‘Brand New Day’ could exceed nine, and possibly reach eleven when figures like the Hulk and the Punisher are included. Leaked promotional artwork surfaced online showing Michael Mando’s Mac Gargan fully suited up as Scorpion, complete with a heavy armored exoskeleton and a mechanical tail, fulfilling a promise Marvel made all the way back in the post-credits scene of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’ Both Boomerang and Tarantula are reported to appear primarily in an opening montage showing what Spider-Man has been up to since the events of ‘No Way Home,’ rather than serving as central threats throughout the full story.
The villain conversation, however, keeps circling back to one name. Sadie Sink joined ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ in March 2025 in an undisclosed role, and while Marvel has yet to confirm her character, multiple scoopers all but confirmed she is playing Jean Grey. Leaked audio from a second trailer appears to confirm that the lead villain uses mind control, taking control of Bruce Banner and transforming him into a rampaging Hulk capable of going toe-to-toe with the web-slinger, while also using a member of the public to threaten MJ. She has even been cast in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ giving credibility to the Jean Grey rumor and suggesting her role in ‘Brand New Day’ is merely an introductory arc for a much larger story.
Rounding out the chaos are the Hand, the Punisher, and what may be the Enforcers. Leaked behind-the-scenes footage revealed a new female villain appearing to lead the Hand in their attack on Spider-Man, with theories pointing toward Mariko Yashida as a possible candidate. Reports also suggest the Punisher will steal Department of Damage Control technology described as effective against the Hulk, potentially setting up a rampage sequence involving all three characters. Daniel Richtman separately claims the Enforcers will appear, with a reported lineup including Fancy Dan, Frederick Foswell, Montana, and Ox.
If Jean Grey is indeed the film’s primary antagonist, she would introduce something entirely new to Spider-Man’s corner of the MCU, a character whose powers are not tied to accidents or technology but to something she was born with, including a connection to the Phoenix Force and catastrophic telepathic ability. Whether director Destin Daniel Cretton can hold all of these threads together without the whole thing collapsing under its own weight remains the central question fans cannot stop debating, so which leaked villain has you most eager to see Peter Parker face off against when ‘Brand New Day’ finally swings into theaters?
