‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Joined an Exclusive Box Office Club Only One Other Superhero Movie Has Ever Reached
The summer movie season has delivered its fair share of surprises this year, but few have been as quietly dominant as Marvel’s latest web-slinging outing. While flashier debuts have come and gone throughout the season, one film has simply refused to budge from the top of the box office charts, week after week, through a stretch of the calendar that usually favors fresh competition.
That kind of staying power doesn’t happen often in franchise filmmaking, where even beloved sequels typically get bumped after a weekend or two by the next big release. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ opened to a record-breaking $360.1 million domestically back in late July, already the biggest opening weekend in Sony’s history, and rather than fading afterward, the film just kept climbing through the Labor Day frame.
That consistency has now landed it in genuinely rare company. ‘Brand New Day’ has officially spent six consecutive weekends at number one at the domestic box office, making it only the second superhero film in history to reach that milestone, joining 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ in that exclusive club.
What makes this particular achievement stand out is the nature of the streak itself. ‘Brand New Day’ has now recorded the longest unbroken run at the top for any MCU movie ever, surpassing the five-weekend streaks previously set by 2018’s ‘Black Panther’ and its 2022 sequel ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.’
‘No Way Home,’ by comparison, built its own six-weekend total in a much choppier fashion. That film spent four consecutive weekends at number one before Scream knocked it out of the top spot, only for it to climb back for two additional, non-consecutive weekends later on. ‘Brand New Day’ has managed the feat in one completely uninterrupted stretch, a distinction that matters quite a bit when ranking sheer box office dominance.
Much of that consistency comes down to unusually weak competition throughout its run. Films releasing in the wake of Spider-Man’s dominance, including titles like ‘One Night Only,’ ‘The Dog Stars,’ ‘Insidious: Out of the Further,’ ‘Coyote vs. Acme,’ and ‘The End of Oak Street,’ have largely underperformed or flopped outright, leaving nothing capable of seriously challenging its grip on the top spot.
The film pulled in roughly $22 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend alone, pushing it past the $900 million mark domestically and putting it within striking distance of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which still holds the all-time domestic box office record. Globally, the numbers are just as staggering, with ‘Brand New Day’ surpassing $2.33 billion worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing film of all time behind only ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ after recently overtaking ‘Avatar: The Way of Water.’

Whether it can eventually catch ‘Endgame’s $2.799 billion global haul remains to be seen, especially given that the film’s early box office trajectory actually trailed that MCU predecessor on several fronts before pulling ahead. Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s film wasn’t the only notable performer over the holiday frame, either, as Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ also starring ‘Brand New Day’ lead Tom Holland, landed at number two that same weekend, pushing its own domestic total past the $588 million mark.
For a franchise that had already redefined what a modern Spider-Man movie could accomplish commercially, this new milestone adds yet another layer to what’s shaping up as one of the biggest theatrical success stories of the year. With the all-time domestic crown potentially within reach in the coming weeks, all eyes remain on just how much further this particular web can stretch.
