‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s’ Savage Hulk Reveal Has Fans Losing Their Minds

The Hulk has spent nearly seven years as the composed, science-minded version of himself that Marvel introduced in ‘Avengers Endgame’. That version, known as Smart Hulk, merged Bruce Banner’s intellect with the monster’s brawn and effectively retired the character’s more dangerous instincts. The latest confirmation came from the fan account Cosmic Marvel, which posted a short GIF captioned “Savage Hulk transformation in ‘SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY.'” The clip, which had racked up 24,000 views along with more than a thousand likes within hours, shows a blurred glimpse of the transformation sequence teased throughout the film’s marketing. It quickly became a talking point among fans already anticipating the character’s darker turn.

Marvel Studios has since unveiled its most detailed look yet at this new version of the character, revealing a redesigned Savage Hulk built to look noticeably more monstrous and far less resembling Mark Ruffalo’s own features than any previous iteration. That shift was reportedly intentional, part of an effort to push the character back toward his more feral comic book roots rather than keep him tied to Ruffalo’s likeness.

Without his Hulk inhibitor device suppressing his gamma-mutated DNA, Banner regresses back into Savage Hulk, seemingly due to falling under the telepathic control of a mysterious hooded woman. That threat appears to be able to jump into people’s bodies, causing Ruffalo to turn back into the uncontrollable, angry Savage Hulk last seen in ‘Avengers Infinity War.’ The parallel between Peter’s own uncontrollable mutation and Banner’s loss of control has become one of the film’s central emotional threads.

It has been quite a while since the MCU gave audiences a truly savage Hulk, with even ‘Thor Ragnarok’ leaning into a more controlled version of the character. That drought is a big part of why this reveal has generated so much buzz, with longtime fans treating the Cosmic Marvel clip as validation after years of speculation about the character’s fate.
