‘Spider-Man’ Star Marisa Tomei (61) Skips the Gym Entirely, and Her Wellness Secret Is Refreshingly Simple
In a world obsessed with punishing workout routines and complicated beauty regimens, Marisa Tomei is proving that less really can be more. The Oscar winner has shared her wellness secret, and it’s far more relaxed than anything you’ll find in a trendy fitness studio.
Tomei rose to international fame with her comedic turn as Mona Lisa Vito in ‘My Cousin Vinny’, which earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She later picked up additional Oscar nominations for ‘In the Bedroom’ and ‘The Wrestler’, and more recently became familiar to a new generation as Aunt May in the MCU.
Now, the 61-year-old has opened up to PEOPLE about how she really takes care of herself. Rather than logging hours at the gym, Tomei says she prioritizes plenty of sleep and time spent in nature.
She admitted with a laugh that she loves getting a lot of rest and revealed she doesn’t even go to the gym. Tomei does exercise, but she prefers functional movement such as walking over traditional workouts.
The accompanying photo shoot reflects that grounded approach. Captured by photographer Lisa Leone, Tomei is seen relaxing in a simple black outfit, leaning against a large terracotta pot in front of a rustic stone wall.
Tomei also credits her upbringing for shaping her outlook. She explained that even though her mother worked, she made a meal every day so the family could sit down together, a simple and consistent ritual that became built into her nervous system.
The actress believes that kind of connection has real benefits. She noted that shared laughter, shared insights, and being in tune with one another are grounded in science, pointing out that these moments help lower stress levels.
That less-is-more mindset also inspired Tomei’s business venture. She founded Terra Mare, a supplement brand that officially launched in June 2025, with a name drawn from the Italian words for “Earth” and “Sea.”
The company focuses on women’s health, addressing issues like metabolism, hormones, and age-related changes with organic ingredients sourced from around the world. Its lineup includes Morning Restore, a collagen powder with vitamins, prebiotics, and probiotics, along with Derma Renew, Daily Rejuvenation, and UT Wellness.
Tomei told PEOPLE she loves how easy the products are to use. She explained that women have long faced pressure to look a certain way, so she wanted to create something simple that wouldn’t fuel another cycle of chasing perfection.
The brand puts Tomei alongside a growing list of famous names in the supplement space. Kourtney Kardashian Barker has Lemme, while Kate Hudson launched InBloom. Despite her laid-back approach to wellness, Tomei’s career is anything but slow. She recently described returning to work after an enforced fallow period, saying it felt good to find projects that genuinely spoke to her.
She stars in the comedy ‘You’re Dating a Narcissist!’, which is now playing in theaters. She’s also set to play Rachel Zegler’s mother in ‘She Gets It From Me’, portraying a pill-popping, ex-punk rocker birth mother who turns her daughter’s engagement celebration upside down.
On top of that, Tomei is joining Casey Affleck, Sam Rockwell, and Kathy Bates in ‘The Smack’, based on Richard Lange’s 2017 novel. Earlier this year, she was also spotted cheering on athletes at the Winter Olympics in Italy.
With her 62nd birthday arriving this winter, Tomei seems more at ease than ever. Her approach is a refreshing reminder that feeling good doesn’t have to mean following the latest extreme trend.
