Star Wars Teases Possible Return of Mara Jade in Canon through New ‘Battle of Jakku’ Comic Series
Before Disney’s acquisition, a vast array of stories expanded the Star Wars universe beyond the films. This included novels, comic books, and video games that introduced new characters, planets, and plots making Star Wars lore significantly greater and in turn more complicated.
2014, Disney redefined the Star Wars canon to streamline the storylines and provide a more cohesive universe. They declared that only the films, the animated series ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars,’ ‘Star Wars Rebels,’ and some new novels would be considered official canon.
Plenty of characters and storylines were de-canonized, including Mara Jade.
Mara Jade is a popular ‘Star Wars’ Legends character known as the “Emperor’s Fist,” a skilled Force-sensitive assassin who initially served Emperor Palpatine and was ordered to kill Luke Skywalker.
After the Emperor’s death, she became a smuggler, eventually forming an alliance with Luke, which led to their romance and marriage. Though removed from official canon, Mara remains a fan favorite, with many hoping she’ll be reintroduced into Star Wars canon someday.
And this day is perhaps here. ScreenRant recently published an interesting theory that the most recent Star Wars storyline is setting up Mara Jade’s return.
Currently, Marvel Comics is publishing a new Star Wars comic series set right after ‘Return of the Jedi,’ following the Battle of Endor, which could open the door for her return.
In ‘Star Wars: Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising’ #2 by Alex Segura, Leonard Kirk, and Rachelle Rosenburg, the Force guides Luke to find a Jedi star compass hidden in one of Palpatine’s secret observatories—only for him to be attacked by dark-side cultists led by a red-haired woman who claims loyalty to Palpatine and Darth Vader.
The woman’s name is “Yuan Howzell” but that doesn’t mean that her story won’t be set up in the same exact way as Mara Jade’s storyline.
It’s not exactly what the fans have been asking for, but it’s possible that “Yuan Howzell” will eventually serve as the canonical equivalent of Mara Jade.
