Stephen King Joins Mike Flanagan’s The Dark Tower Adaptation: ‘It’s Happening’
Mike Flanagan is moving forward with his adaptation of The Dark Tower, one of Stephen King’s most beloved fantasy series. Flanagan, known for his work on Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game, has reassured fans that his version will closely follow the books. Now, he has an even stronger connection to King’s world—Stephen King himself has confirmed he’s directly involved in the project.
At IGN Fan Fest 2025, King was asked if he would contribute new material to the adaptation, similar to what he did for The Stand TV series in 2020. King responded, “All I can say is it’s happening. I am writing stuff now… I’m in process right now, and to say too much feels like a jinx.”
King first started writing The Dark Tower series back in 1970, and the books have become a massive part of his literary universe. While it’s unclear exactly what new material he’s working on for the adaptation, it’s clear that Flanagan is determined to bring the story to life as faithfully as possible.
In a past interview, Flanagan stated, “It would look like the books… The way not to do The Dark Tower is to try to turn it into something else, to try to make it Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.”
Fans have been waiting for a proper adaptation after the disappointing 2017 film starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. While no release date has been set, Flanagan has plenty of King projects on his plate, including The Life of Chuck, set to release in May, and a Carrie series in development for Amazon.
With King himself now contributing, The Dark Tower adaptation is shaping up to be the version fans have been hoping for.
