‘Superman & Lois’ Season 4 Adds Douglas Smith To Play a Notable Character
‘Superman & Lois’ has garnered praise as one of CW’s top superhero shows. Despite CW’s restructuring and cancelation of many projects, ‘Superman & Lois’ secured its season 4 renewal shortly before the season 3 finale. Although loosely connected to the Arrowverse, the show has distinguished itself from other CW superhero series, which have faced criticism in recent years.
Season 4 has been confirmed as the show’s final season, with reduced episodes, a smaller main cast, and a smaller writing team due to budget constraints. Despite these changes, an iconic character, Jimmy Olsen, is set to appear, with Douglas Smith cast in the role according to TVLine.
In the show, Jimmy is depicted as an outgoing young adult who is known for being the life of the party at work. Despite working closely with Clark, he struggles to break through Clark’s reserved demeanor. Unaware of Clark’s secret identity as Superman, Jimmy is determined to befriend him.
If you’ve been following the Arrowverse, you might be confused because a different version of Jimmy Olsen appeared in ‘Supergirl’ played by Mehcad Brooks. However, it’s important to note that the showrunners of ‘Superman & Lois’ chose to distance the series from the Arrowverse. Following the second season finale, it was explained that ‘Superman & Lois’ actually takes place in a different universe, while the Arrowverse is set on Earth-Prime. So, in simple terms, Mehcad Brooks’ Jimmy Olsen doesn’t exist in the ‘Superman & Lois’ universe, and vice versa, meaning the characters are not connected in any way.
Douglas Smith’s portrayal of Jimmy Olsen suggests that this version of the character will be younger than expected, leading fans to speculate that he may appear in flashbacks.
Smith began his acting career at a young age, starring as Malvolio in a school production of ‘Twelfth Night.’ He has since appeared in various films and television series, including ‘Blast from the Past’ (1999), as well as TV shows like ‘CSI’ and ‘The X-Files.’ He gained recognition for his role as Ben Henrickson in the HBO series ‘Big Love’ and appeared in Brandon Cronenberg’s ‘Antiviral.’
Notable roles in projects such as ‘Terminator Genisys,’ ‘Vinyl,’ and ‘The Alienist’ have solidified his reputation as a versatile actor. In 2019, Smith joined the cast of ‘Big Little Lies,’ earning a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. He reprised his role in the second season of ‘The Alienist’ and starred in films like ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ and ‘The Swearing Jar.’
