‘Superman & Lois’ Season 4 Premiere Teases the Arrival of a Major DC Villain
Superman & Lois recently made its return with an emotion-packed two-hour premiere, picking up right where Season 3 left off. Superman was locked in a brutal, world-shattering battle with Lex Luthor’s monster, Doomsday.
Then, the unthinkable happened—something the actors and producers had been teasing since the first promos for Season 4: Superman died.
The battle between Superman and Doomsday raged for 24 hours. When Superman tried to stop Doomsday with his heat vision, Doomsday responded by launching him through an entire planet.
Returning to Earth, Doomsday left Superman’s lifeless body in Smallville, right before Lois and their sons. The nightmare worsened when they discovered that Superman’s heart had been removed, later presented as a grotesque gift to Lex Luthor. Lex had a special container designed to hold the heart.
Luthor is seen with a transparent box, framed in metal, with a UV-like light inside, seemingly meant to weaken the heart. He mentions that “Milton,” its creator, promised it would work. When Lex praises the invention, Amanda McCoy cautions him against feeding the “Brainiac’s” ego.
Though Season 4 was rumored to introduce a major villain, many speculated about Brainiac’s arrival. Introducing him this late in the series opens intriguing possibilities for the finale.
Executive producer Brent Fletcher teased that this version of Brainiac will be different from any we’ve seen before.
Considering what we needed for our story when the opportunity presented itself to use Milton, it worked out great. This is a completely different version of this guy, so that was exciting. We always like to tell our own version of [the story], and it ends up being pretty fun.

Fletcher noted that this version of the villain will be uniquely tailored to the show, as every storyline had to be streamlined to fit within the 10-episode format. This is no small feat, especially with the resurrection of Superman still looming.
