Sydney Sweeney’s return to the world of Freida McFadden’s twisty thrillers is fully underway, and ‘The Housemaid’s Secret’ filming has turned New Jersey into one of the busiest set-spotting hubs in the country. The sequel to Lionsgate’s surprise hit has been shooting across the Garden State all month, with fans eagerly tracking every glimpse of Millie Calloway’s next chapter.

That excitement makes sense, given how big the first film turned out to be. ‘The Housemaid’ opened to a modest $19 million before collecting $125 million domestically and nearly $400 million globally, all on a $35 million budget, and Lionsgate wasted little time greenlighting a follow-up.

The latest batch of set photos arrived this week. Sweeney was seen filming on Monday, October 27, walking down a set of outdoor stairs in New Jersey for a scene, according to shots shared on social media.

For the sequence, she wore a dark floral maxi dress paired with a soft white knit cardigan, with her long blonde hair styled in loose waves. A carved jack-o’-lantern sat on the stoop beside her, adding a seasonal touch to the moody brick-and-red-door backdrop.

The outing came just a day after Sweeney filmed alongside new co-star Kirsten Dunst in Jersey City on Sunday, October 26. The pair appeared to shoot a scene together in a car, sharing a laugh between takes.

The production has been hopping from location to location. Sweeney was earlier seen filming at William Paterson University in Wayne, and she later teamed up with returning co-star Michele Morrone, who plays Enzo, for scenes in Hoboken.

Those Hoboken set photos, taken on October 14, showed Enzo kissing Millie’s forehead as the two seemed locked in a serious conversation. Crews also set up along Garden Street, while filming reportedly started quietly in the Heights neighborhood of Jersey City.

Fittingly, the original ‘Housemaid’ was also shot in New Jersey, so the sequel is very much returning to familiar ground. Director Paul Feig has been spotted on set as well, walking alongside Sweeney between scenes.

The story adapts the second novel in McFadden’s trilogy. This time around, Millie takes a job keeping house for a woman she is never allowed to see, only to uncover what lies behind a locked door, a discovery that threatens to expose secrets even darker than her own.

Dunst and Paul Anthony Kelly play the Garricks, the wealthy couple at the center of Millie’s new job, with Kelly making his film debut as billionaire Douglas Garrick. Brittany Snow joins as Marybeth, while Stephen Kalyn of ‘Off Campus’ has been cast as Brock.

Behind the camera, Feig returns to direct from a script by Rebecca Sonnenshine, who also adapted the first movie. Sweeney is producing through her Fifty-Fifty Films banner alongside Feig, Laura Fischer and Todd Lieberman.

Lionsgate has slated the thriller for a wide theatrical release on December 17. The studio is once again positioning it as counter-programming in the crowded Christmas corridor, putting it head-to-head with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’.

The ambitions don’t stop there, either. Lionsgate has said it hopes to build ‘The Housemaid’ into a major film franchise, with plans to adapt more of McFadden’s work, including the third novel, ‘The Housemaid Is Watching’.

With filming in full swing and new set photos surfacing almost daily, Sweeney’s Millie is clearly gearing up for another round of secrets, lies, and locked doors. If the first movie’s success is any indication, audiences will be lining up to see what she uncovers next.
