The story of Fullmetal Alchemist is set in Amestris an alternate world where Alchemy is practiced and a legitimate discipline. With the help of transmutation circles skilled Alchemists have the ability to create almost anything they desire. There are a few things that Alchemists are not allowed to meddle in and those are gold and humans as human transmutation has never been done successfully and is off limits, even punishable by death.
