Apple TV’s beloved comedy is finally back, and returning to Richmond means saying goodbye to a few familiar faces along the way. Phil Dunster, who played Jamie Tartt, is one of several beloved cast members not returning full time for the fourth season. For a show built on found family and underdog spirit, losing one of its most transformed characters was always going to sting.
Jamie’s journey was one of the show’s most satisfying arcs. The self-obsessed player from season one slowly grew into a team leader willing to share the spotlight, becoming a better player and a better person in the process, with his complicated relationship with his father handled with real sensitivity along the way. According to Variety, Dunster will not appear in ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4, and the show has written Jamie Tartt off by sending him to play for FC Barcelona, with his exit revealed through a newspaper headline in the season premiere rather than an onscreen appearance. Co creator Brendan Hunt, who also plays Coach Beard, addressed the decision directly. “Phil was going to be busy, but also, it would have strained credulity a bit further than we wanted to if all the old team were still on Richmond,” Hunt said. “If this team is doing so well, then the best players would be gone. They’d be bought by bigger clubs.”
The real world explanation is simpler than the in universe one. Dunster was busy filming HBO Max’s ‘Rooster,’ which made it impossible for him to return to Richmond this time around. Hunt also pointed out that the storyline made sense narratively, since a rising club in real life football would naturally see its biggest stars poached by bigger money clubs, and with the rebooted series shifting focus toward the AFC Richmond women’s team, there simply was not much room left for a Jamie Tartt subplot this season.
Dunster himself has been coy about a return for months. Earlier this year he addressed rumors after being spotted on the ‘Ted Lasso’ set, explaining that his wife, Eleanor Heydon, directed an episode of the new season, which gave him a reason to be around without confirming or denying whether Jamie would actually appear onscreen. That ambiguity kept fans hopeful, even as reporting suggested his role would be limited at best.
Dunster is not the only original cast member sitting this season out. Nick Mohammed’s Nathan Shelley was also left off the initial season 4 cast announcement, though the actor has teased a possible appearance after hinting online that scheduling conflicts were tied to the show. For longtime viewers, it is a reminder that the Richmond of season four looks noticeably different from the one they fell in love with.
Between the women’s team taking center stage and a wave of cast departures, this new chapter of ‘Ted Lasso’ is clearly trying to evolve rather than simply repeat what worked before.
