‘The Boys’ Star, Jack Quaid Reflects on His Unsuccessful ‘Superman’ Audition: “it went nowhere”
Many of you know Jack Quaid from his prominent role in the globally popular TV show ‘The Boys,’ which remains his most famous role and his first major break in the superhero genre.
Although Quaid has also voiced characters in ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ and the titular role in ‘My Adventures with Superman,’ he had aspirations to portray Superman in live-action as well. In a recent interview, Quaid revealed that he submitted an audition tape for the role, but unfortunately, it did not go well.
Quaid revealed that “everybody” auditioned for James Gunn’s first live-action DCU installment, but, like many others, he did not progress far in the process.
I did, yeah. I think everybody did, if you kind of fit the bill. I didn’t get very far at all. I put myself on tape and it went nowhere and that’s totally fine, like that’s totally cool.
Quaid doesn’t fit the classic, iconic image of Superman, which likely influenced the outcome of his audition. However, he has already excelled in bringing an animated version of Superman to life almost flawlessly. Quaid also cleared up that he is fine with Gunn’s choice of Superman:
Specifically because I actually know David Corenswet a little bit. We did a pilot years ago that never went anywhere, but he’s one of those people you meet, ‘Oh yeah, like whenever you need another one, it’s probably gonna be you.’ That guy is Superman. I know I don’t — I remember getting that audition being like ‘yeah, sure, I’m the voice of Superman in a cartoon, but I don’t really think I fit the bill physically at all and that’s fine, that’s totally cool.
Recently, Quaid attracted significant attention by openly acknowledging that he fits the “nepo baby” label. For those who might not know, he is the only child of actors Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid.
Yeah, I mean, no matter what I do, people are going to call attention to it. People have called me a “nepo baby.” I’m inclined to agree. I am an immensely privileged person, was able to get representation pretty early on, and that’s more than half the battle. I knew the door was open for me in a lot of ways that it’s just not for a lot of actors. And I’ve just tried to work as hard as I possibly can to prove that I deserve to walk through that door. So if that’s in the rom-com space, it’s got to be different enough, and I need to work my ass off.
