‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Director Reveals Why One Original Star Refused to Return
A new update about The Devil Wears Prada 2 has revealed why one original cast member will not be returning for the sequel. Director David Frankel spoke about it in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Frankel explained that the team did try to bring back several familiar faces from the 2006 film, but not everyone was able to return. One of the names discussed was Gisele Bündchen, who had a small but memorable role in the original movie. She played Serena, a Runway staff member known for a scene where she compliments Andy Sachs’ fashion change.
Frankel said, “I think we reached out to Gisele Bündchen, who had a really memorable part.” He also said the main issue was timing. According to him, it was difficult to make the schedule work. He added, “When we were shooting last summer, she was having a baby, and out of town, it was hard to schedule it.”
Bündchen gave birth in February 2025, which overlaps with the film’s production period. Because of this, she did not return for the sequel. Frankel noted that she was the only one from the first film who was directly offered a return but could not take part.
Entertainment Weekly also confirmed earlier that Adrian Grenier, who played Nate in the original film, will not be in the sequel either. Other original cast members like Simon Baker, Rich Sommer, Daniel Sunjata, Rebecca Mader, and Stéphanie Szostak are also not returning.
Even so, the sequel will still include several familiar names. Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci are coming back for The Devil Wears Prada 2. Frankel also mentioned that Heidi Klum has a short cameo in the film. There are also a few surprise appearances, including pop star Lady Gaga, who also contributes to the soundtrack with a song titled “Runway.”
Frankel shared more background in past interviews, including memories from the first film’s release. He also recalled a brief and awkward meeting with Anna Wintour after the original movie premiered. He said he once tried to introduce himself to her at a public event, but the interaction did not go smoothly.
There was also an attempt to include Wintour in the sequel as a cameo, but Frankel said the moment did not work out during filming.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set to continue the story from the original film and will arrive in theaters this Friday.
It is always interesting when sequels bring back most of the original cast but still miss a few key names. It changes the feel of the movie, even if only slightly. At the same time, real-life schedules and personal situations often get in the way, so it is not surprising. What do you think about cast changes in sequels like this?
