‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ to Feature Rare Full-Frame IMAX 1.43 Scenes

Marvel’s upcoming film The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to make a significant impact on the big screen by incorporating scenes shot in the full IMAX 1.43:1 aspect ratio. This marks it as only the second MCU film to utilize this format, following Eternals, which featured select sequences in 1.43:1.

The 1.43:1 aspect ratio offers a taller and more immersive viewing experience compared to the standard 1.90:1 IMAX format commonly used in many films.

This format has been employed in notable films such as Interstellar, The Dark Knight, and Oppenheimer to enhance the visual storytelling.

In addition to the IMAX scenes, The Fantastic Four: First Steps also includes sequences shot on 16mm and 35mm film. This choice of film stock contributes to a distinct visual texture and aesthetic, particularly in scenes depicting Reed Richards’ early life and astronaut experiences.

These scenes are presented in a 4:3 aspect ratio, adding a nostalgic and intimate feel to the story as a whole. This format just fits the time and our expectations of how it’s supposed to look.

Director Matt Shakman, known for his work on WandaVision, has a history of experimenting with aspect ratios to serve the story.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is scheduled for release on July 25, 2025.
