The Finale Shooting in ‘Reasonable Doubt’ Season 3 and Where It Leaves Jax

The finale of ‘Reasonable Doubt’ ends with a gunshot inside Jax Stewart’s brand new law firm, and viewers have been asking who pulled the trigger. The answer is Monica, played by Brandee Evans, who fires a shot at Jax, her family and her friends in the closing scene.

The moment arrives in a finale titled ‘On to the Next One,’ which also revealed who killed Wendy. What follows looks at how the cliffhanger is built, what the people behind the show have said about it, and what it could mean for the story ahead.

Who Shot Jax in the Closing Scene

Monica is the manager of Ozzie Edwards, the former child star Jax defends, and Jax learns during the trial that Monica abused him as a child. That abuse inadvertently led Ozzie into the drug addiction he tried to overcome while the case played out.

Jax, Lewis and Daniel are at Jax’s new firm when a woman walks in. The scene ends without confirming who, if anyone, was hit. One recap notes that viewers will only learn whether Lewis and Jax survived the attack, or whether either of them met a fateful end, if the series continues.

Monica is not a surprise arrival in terms of setup. At Ozzie’s funeral she makes eye contact with Jax from a distance.

Why Monica Shot Jax and What the Creator Says

Showrunner Raamla Mohamed told Variety that the ending was originally meant to hide the shooter’s identity. Her thinking changed while she watched a cut of an earlier episode in which Evans yells at Jax, and she decided that kind of anger would not simply fade.

Mohamed said she asked Evans to show up looking like someone who has not slept in months and is furious, and that Evans fully committed. She added that she likes endings that are “surprising, but not out of nowhere.”

Speaking to TheWrap, Mohamed described Monica as a person who has lost everything and is spinning a story about whose fault that is. She called Monica delusional, someone who blames another person for something that is entirely her own doing.

The Finale Twist About Wendy’s Killer

The central case followed Ozzie, who was accused of murdering his girlfriend Wendy, played by Rumer Willis, and he was found not guilty. Jax invited him to a family dinner to celebrate, and later told him she had arranged for a rehab facility to pick him up.

When the transporters arrived, Ozzie was found unresponsive in Jax’s son’s bedroom, and medics could not revive him after an overdose. That scene connects back to the opening of the season, which showed Jax finding someone dead in her child’s room.

At Ozzie’s repass, his sister Kristin revealed that their father had actually killed Wendy. The finale shows that Sal shot Wendy and then suffocated her after she promised to tell Ozzie about his family’s sinister ways, with Kristin helping him finish the job.

Mohamed said the killer was first going to be Kristin, then Ozzie’s mother, before the writers settled on the father because he felt he had something to prove.

Jax’s New Law Firm and the Road to Season 4

Jax packed up her corner office and started her own firm after dealing with microaggressions inside her old one, including a co-counsel who became partner without her knowledge. Mohamed wanted the exit to feel joyous, and Jax leaves in red, a color the showrunner connected to both power and anger.

That sense of release is what makes the shooting land so sharply. In Mohamed’s words, the moment was meant to be a victory for Jax, who lost the case in the previous season and wanted a win this time.

The series has been officially renewed for Season 4, and Mohamed said the writers room is open and breaking ideas, with a goal of making the next season better than the last. She also said she originally pitched four seasons, though she is now open to the show running as long as it stays good. The current season is streaming on Hulu and Disney+.

With Monica’s motive rooted in grief she has aimed at the wrong person, the question is whether the show lets Jax and her family walk away from that gunshot unharmed, and whether Monica should answer for what happened to Ozzie before she answers for what she did in Jax’s office.
