‘The Godfather Part III’ and ‘Species’ Actor Anthony Guidera Dies at 65 After Weeks on Life Support

Hollywood has lost one of its quietly reliable character actors. Anthony Guidera was not the kind of name that dominated marquees or tabloid covers, but for anyone who watched closely during the blockbuster era of the 1990s, his face was unmistakable. Born in San Francisco, Guidera built a steady career across some of the biggest film productions of his decade, moving between action, drama, and genre fare with a natural ease that kept him working steadily from 1990 through the mid-2000s.

Before breaking into Hollywood, Guidera performed in plays in Paris, a foundation that would serve him well when he transitioned to screen work. His first acting role came in Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Godfather Part III’, where he played a bodyguard named Anthony and shared the screen with Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Andy García, Joe Mantegna, and Bridget Fonda. It was a debut that instantly placed him in the company of cinema royalty, and the industry took notice.

Anthony Guidera has died at the age of 65. His wife Valarie Anderson told TMZ that he suddenly collapsed on May 11 in the living room of their Southern California home, and his heart stopped beating. He was rushed to the hospital and placed on life support for three weeks. Per his own prior wishes, doctors took him off life support so he could return home, where he passed away on June 6. His cause of death remains a mystery, as doctors have been unable to determine what stopped his heart.

Anderson shared the news in a Facebook post over the weekend, writing that the family was “devastated and trying to breathe through the impossible, taking each moment as it comes,” and asked that people hold Guidera “in their hearts” and keep the family in their prayers. Guidera and his wife had also volunteered with Astara, a spiritual foundation in Palos Verdes Estates, California, where he was known within the organization as “Reverend Anthony.”

Beyond his debut in the Coppola classic, Guidera landed the role of Robbie in Roger Donaldson’s 1995 sci-fi horror film ‘Species’, opposite Natasha Henstridge, and went on to appear in ‘The Rock’, ‘The Postman’, and ‘Armageddon’. One of his most celebrated moments came when he and Henstridge won the MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss for ‘Species’ in 1996, placing him among the defining pop-culture highlights of that era. His television work was equally broad, with guest appearances on ‘Baywatch’, ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’, ‘Nash Bridges’, ‘Angel’, and ‘ER’.

Guidera appeared in nearly 30 film and television projects between 1990 and 2005, with his final listed screen credit being the 2005 film ‘L.A. Dicks’. He is survived by his wife Valarie and their son Nick. Fans have been flooding social media with tributes, remembering him as someone who brought genuine presence to every role he touched. One commenter captured the mood well, writing that Guidera had “that unforgettable presence in ‘The Godfather Part III’ and ‘Species'” and calling his passing “a true loss for the acting community.”

For those who grew up watching the blockbusters of the 1990s, Guidera was part of the fabric of that era, a steadying presence in ensemble casts that defined a generation of cinema. If ‘The Godfather Part III’, ‘Species’, or ‘Armageddon’ holds a special place in your memory, share which performance of his stays with you most.
