The Legend Of Vox Machina: Every Character’s Class & Powers

Share:

The Legend of Vox Machina is an Amazon Original series that delivers an ensemble cast of characters instead of one or a few central characters that the show revolves around. Of course, each of these characters has powers that allow them to contribute to this dysfunctional yet balanced group of adventurers. That said, let us look at the class and the powers that each character on Vox Machina has.

Grog Strongjaw

Background

Probably the most basic character in terms of his class and powers is Grog Strongjaw because he is the team’s resident tank. He is a member of the goliath race, which are distant relatives of giants. This is why he is so big and strong. Despite his mean appearance and large and imposing frame, Grog is kind of a softie that can be sensitive at times, especially when it comes to his best friend Pike, who he hangs out with and drinks with a lot.

Grog started out with a group of warriors called the Herd of Storms, which are also similar to his race. The Herd of Storms live to fight and kill, and that is why they don’t hesitate to kill anyone they encounter. Grog eventually left the group when he befriended Pike, who he saved from the attack of the Herd of Storms.

Class

Grog belongs to the barbarian class, and that fits perfectly with his large frame and tendency for violence. He is someone who also loves to fight and kill because of his background with the Herd of Storms. However, he doesn’t kill for fun and will only fight those who are strong.

Powers

Grog has no powers because he relies only on his brute strength. As a goliath and a barbarian, he is the strongest and most physically imposing member of the group. This means that he can take hits and dish them out as well. Of course, that is the role of any tank on a team.

Pike Trickfoot

Background

Pike Trickfoot is a gone who used to belong to a family of thieves until his great grandfather decided to pursue another path in life. That is why Pike grew up in a family that worshiped the goddess Everlight, as his great grandfather also pursued a religious life so that he could ditch the life of a thief.

She became friends with Grog and formed the foundations of Vox Machina when the goliath saved her from an attack. In turn, Pike sought out Grog to heal his wounds. That is how they became best friends and drinking buddies.

Class

Pike Trickfoot is a cleric. That is why she is the team’s resident religious person, as her strong spiritual powers allow her to have a connection with the goddess Everlight, who helps give her the power she needs to support her teammates.

Powers

In a straight-up fight, Pike tends to be powerless, but she has always been one of the most useful members of the team because she can heal and support them. She derives her powers from the goddess Everlight, who uses her as a conduit to perform miracles or spells that come in the form of blessings or healing spells.

Scanlan Shorthalt

Background

Scanlan Shorthalt is the team’s second gone. He is also the team’s most talkative member and doubles as their resident clown because he is almost always the one cracking the jokes. On top of that, he is also the team’s most sexually active member because he always finds a way to find someone to have sex with.

Born in a poor household with only his mom supporting him, Scanlan was forced to become a bard that joined a traveling troupe. However, his mom was killed by goblins, and that is why he resorted to joining a mercenary group. This was how he was able to join up with Grog, who was a member of a mercenary group that laid the foundations for Vox Machina.

Class

Scanlan’s class is a bard, and that means that he uses his songs to perform the spells he needs to support the group. However, unlike some of the classic bards we see in RPGs and other games, Scanlan is the type of bard that uses his powers for offense instead of for support.

Powers

As a bard, Scanlan’s weapon is his lute. He uses his lute to perform songs that allow him to conjure up all sorts of spells. One of his most prominent spells includes the large hand that he can conjure up with a song. He uses this hand for offense and also for other means, such as allowing him to float in the air.

Vax’ildan

Background

Vax’ildan, or simply Vax, is one-half of the twins that are both members of Vox Machina. He was born to a human mother and an elf father, who was actually an ambassador for the elves. Vax is also considered the most good-looking member of the group, and he often uses his looks to charm the sorcerer merchant Gilmore.

Along with his sister, Vax lived among humans throughout his childhood until his father took him to the elven capital when he was ten. However, neither he nor his sister was able to fit in well with elven society because they didn’t treat them as equals due to their mixed race. As such, they went back home only to find out that their mother had been killed by a dragon. Not willing to go back to elven society, Vax decided to become a mercenary instead.

Class

Vax is the stealthiest and quickest member of the group, and that is why he can be considered an assassin or a rogue. He is often the one who they rely on to open locked doors or spy on people. This explains why Vax was the one who snuck into the Briarwoods’ room during the events of episode 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina.

Powers

Vax doesn’t have any powers because he relies mainly on his speed and quick hands. He is the stealthiest and quickest member of the group, and that is why he can use a pair of daggers to kill people and creatures alike efficiently. Along with Grog, he is one of two Vox Machina members that fight on the frontlines as close-quarter fighters.

Vex’ahlia

Background

Vex’ahlia, or Vex, is the twin sister of Vax and is also half-elf. She shares the same history with Vax, and that is why they promise to stick by one another due to the fact that she and her brother only had each other since they were young.

The twins’ mother was killed by a dragon, and that is why Vex drowned herself in dragon lore to eventually slay the dragon that killed their mom. Given the fact that she is quite learned, Vex is also one of the most level-headed members of the group and is often the one coming up with plans and strategies. She also has a bear named Trinket, who she saved as a cub.

Class

Unlike her twin brother, Vex focused more on her ability as a ranged fighter. She honed her archery skills, and that is why she became a ranger. As a ranger, she acts as one of the two ranged fighters in the group.

Powers

Like her brother, Vex has no powers to speak of because of the fact that she focuses more on her ability as a ranger. Using her archery skills, Vex can hit targets from several hundreds of feet away and almost never misses. She is also great at tracking down enemies and is proficient at coming up with strategies.

Keyleth

Background

Keyleth is another half-elf member of Vox Machina, but she was born from the Ashari tribe, which is a tribe that guards the elemental plane. Her father was the headmaster of the Air Ashari, and he chose Keyleth to become the next leader. That is why Keyleth needs to go on a quest to prove herself as their leader. She cannot return until she completes her quest.

When she left her village to venture out on her quest, she met the twins Vax and Vex. In The Legends of Vox Machina, it is hinted that there is something going on between her and Vax, and that is something that Vex is against.

Class

Keyleth is an elemental mage that was able to learn how to use magic because she was trained to do so as a child. In fact, most members of the Ashari tribe are mages. She serves as the team’s resident magical powerhouse due to her amazing magical abilities.

Powers

As a mage, Keyleth has plenty of different abilities that make use of the elements. She can use nature to her advantage by controlling plant life and even using different elemental spells to her advantage in battles. Keyleth can also transform into animals using her magical abilities.

Percival “Percy” De Rolo

Background

Percival De Rolo, or simply Percy, belongs to the noble family that once ruled Whitestone before the Briarwoods took over the town and started ruling it as their own. His family welcomed the Briarwoods as guests, but they were betrayed by the evil pair through their own machinations.

All of the De Rolos, except for Percy and his sister, were killed. Percy and his sister were kept in prison and were tortured. However, Percy was the only one who escaped, as he eventually joined up with Vox Machina. Percy’s background is one of the main plots of season 1 of The Legend of Vox Machina.

Class

Percy belongs to the gunslinger class, which is something new because guns are not supposed to exist in their world. He was already interested in engineering even as a boy, but Percy learned how to craft his guns when an entity of vengeance visited him in his dreams and offered the chance to seek vengeance through his guns.

Powers

Percy doesn’t have any powers, but he is a proficient marksman that can shoot his guns from far away. That is why he is one of the two ranged fighters in the group. His guns are also so strong that they can blow away the limbs of any person with a single shot, and that isn’t something we see from the handguns or pistols we have today.

Delilah Briarwood

Background

Delilah Briarwood is one-half of the main antagonists of season 1 of The Legend of Vox Machina, which will follow the Briarwood arc of Critical Role. She is the wife of Sylas Briarwood and the co-leader of Whitestone, which used to be the ancestral home of the De Rolo ruling family.

Before they became the new rulers of Whitestone, Delilah came from Wildemount. She and Sylas got quite close to the De Rolo family, which trusted them wholeheartedly. However, through her machinations, Delilah was able to gain the support of some of the other officers working under the De Rolos to launch a coup and eventually dethrone the ruling family from their place in Whitestone.

Class

Delilah is a human wizard, which comes as a surprise for those who are watching The Legend of Vox Machina for the first time without knowing what Critical Role is. The reason why this may be surprising is that some people may think that Delilah is also a vampire, like her husband. However, she is simply human but is a wizard capable of things that are quite unimaginable.

Powers

As a wizard, Delilah is a zealot of the powerful archlich Vecna, who grants her powers. Thanks to her powers, Delilah is capable of performing feats of magic that far surpass what the other magicians on the show can do. She can raise demonic creatures from the world beyond, and even perform magical spells that can easily decimate armies. However, she is far better as a wizard summoning demonic creatures to aid her in battle.

Sylas Briarwood

Background

Sylas Briarwood is the husband of Delilah Briarwood and started out as human. He actually fell ill with an incurable disease and eventually passed away from it. However, Delilah, through Vecna, performed the rites of vampirism to turn Sylas into a vampire. And that is how Sylas was revived as an undead vampire while Delilah ended up serving Vecna as his zealot.

Eventually, Sylas and Delilah were ousted from their old home, and that was when they tricked the De Rolo family of Whitestone into thinking that they are lords of a distant land. Because the family trusted him, Sylas was able to easily find a way to stage a coup and oust the De Rolos from their place in Whitestone to become one of the new leaders of the town.

Class

Sylas is a powerful vampire that became such as a result of an ancient rite performed by his wife, Delilah. As a vampire, he feeds off the blood of mortals. However, according to Critical Role lore, Sylas can only turn those he bites if and only if they end up dying after getting bitten.

Powers

Thanks to his status as a vampire, Sylas is ridiculously strong and has physical capabilities that are augmented due to vampirism. He is faster and stronger than any other humanoid character we have seen on the show thus fur and is capable of amazing feats with his augmented physical capabilities. Sylas could swing a huge tree trunk with one hand. And, on top of his augmented physical skills, he could also charm people just by looking at them, and that is how the sovereign became one of his thralls.

Byron Anders

Background

Professor Byron Anders is a brilliant man of science who studied the Whitestone rock found only in the town of Whitestone. His brilliance was what allowed him to come under the employment of the De Rolo family of Whitestone, as he was hired to be the private tutors of the De Rolo children.

However, as a man of science, Anders had a higher ambition in relation to what he wanted to do with the stones found on Whitestone. Sensing that he had such high ambitions, the De Rolos told him to put aside his quest for personal gains and to focus more on educating the children. That was what forced him to join up with the Briarwoods, who betrayed the De Rolos.

Class

Byron Anders may be a professor but he belongs to the bard class, which is the same class as Scanlan. However, instead of using his voice as a way of casting magical spells like Scanlan, he uses it for some other purpose such as charming and controlling the minds of other people.

Powers

Using his powers as a bard, Byron Anders is capable of using his voice or silver tongue to control the minds of his opponents. His silver tongue is so powerful that it was able to control four members of Vox Machina all at once. He is also smart enough to know how to use science to his advantage to construct golem-like creatures that could fight for him. However, he has little to no close-combat skills, as getting close to him is the best way for anyone to defeat him.

Cassandra De Rolo

Background

Cassandra De Rolo is the younger sister of Percy De Rolo and was believed to be dead along with all of the other De Rolos after Percy made his escape from the dungeons of Whitestone. However, the truth was that the Briarwoods kept her alive because they needed to use her against the rebellion.

During the time that Cass was kept as a prisoner by the Briarwoods, she was feeding them information from the rebellion so that the rebels won’t be able to do much against them. However, she was eventually saved by Vox Machina and became one of the leaders of the new Whitestone council.

Class

Cassandra belongs to the rogue and fighter classes because she does have some basic training in close-quarter combat and has some knowledge in swordsmanship. It is quite common for children of noble houses to learn how to use a sword so that they could protect themselves, and Cassandra was no different as she learned how to handle herself in a fight during her younger years.

Powers

One of the skills that Cassandra possesses is her ability to use her rogue abilities when sneaking around. She was known to be sneak in and out of the De Rolo palace when she was younger because she didn’t like to attend classes and was quite the troublemaker.

Other than that, Cass is known to be a skillful swordsman as well because she can handle herself well enough in a fight as long as she has a sword in her hands.
