‘The Marvels’: Captain Marvel & Valkyrie Might Be in Love, Here’s What the Movie Says
Being a superhero comes with its own set of challenges, and that’s why many superheroes in the MCU don’t have families. Captain Marvel is no exception; she’s been occupied since embracing her superhero role. However, as the saying goes, the heart wants what it wants. This might explain why Valkyrie made a surprise appearance in ‘The Marvels.’ So, is there a love connection brewing between Captain Marvel and Valkyrie?
What’s Valkyrie doing in ‘The Marvels’?
It’s become a norm in the MCU for characters to make brief appearances in movies that don’t necessarily revolve around them. ‘The Marvels’ is no exception, despite its primary focus on Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan. A particularly intriguing cameo added depth to the narrative, capturing the attention of fans.
In the early scenes of the film, Dar-Benn journeyed to Tarnax, a planet serving as the refuge for Skrull survivors under the leadership of Emperor Drogge. Her purpose in visiting this planet was to discuss the potential for a peace treaty between the Kree and Skrulls. The Kree Empire’s homeworld, Hala, was facing imminent demise due to dwindling resources, prompting the need for diplomatic negotiations.
Captain Marvel stepped in, tracking mysterious jump points to Dar-Benn and the Kree Empire. Her journey led her to Tarnax, where she found herself entangled in the Kree’s affairs. Amidst the complexities, she alternated with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, making it challenging to confront Dar-Benn.
Once Dar-Benn managed to elude the Marvel trio, she conveyed to the Skrulls that the peace treaty had crumbled, citing the perceived threat of the Annihilator (Carol Danvers) sent to assassinate her. Activating the power of her Bangle, Dar-Benn opened a massive jump point, depleting Tarnax of its atmosphere and causing catastrophic damage. The Marvels scrambled to evacuate Emperor Drogge and the Skrulls, though regrettably, not all could be saved.
On the ship, Drogge appeared visibly displeased with Carol’s intervention in the peace talks. Captain Marvel, however, explained to Drogge that Dar-Benn intended to destroy the planet regardless, sacrificing the Skrulls in the process of transferring air from Tarnax to Hala. Despite this revelation, Drogge remained upset about the loss of their refuge.
Assuring Drogge, Carol mentioned that she had called upon a friend for assistance. Monica, utilizing her powers, sensed an approaching force—the Bifrost Bridge, a manifestation of light energy. While Thor is typically associated with the Bifrost through Stormbreaker, it was Valkyrie who made a surprising appearance.
Adorned in regal attire befitting her role as the ruler of Asgard, Valkyrie warmly welcomed Carol and facilitated the Skrulls’ return to New Asgard on Earth via the Bifrost. It became evident that Carol and Valkyrie had maintained communication since the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ This prior connection made it seamless for Captain Marvel to enlist the assistance of the Asgardian king in providing refuge for the Skrulls back on Earth.
Are Captain Marvel & Valkyrie a thing now?
Valkyrie’s surprise appearance in ‘The Marvels’ ignited fan speculation about the potential romantic connection between her and Captain Marvel. While Carol referred to Valkyrie as a “friend,” it leaves room for speculation that their relationship might extend beyond mere platonic affection and admiration.
Right before Valkyrie parted ways with Carol, she planted a peck on her cheek. While friends often share such gestures, particularly when they’re extremely close, it’s worth noting that the sexual orientations of both Captain Marvel and Valkyrie remain unconfirmed. Speculations abound, suggesting the possibility of them being bisexual or lesbian. Adding to the intrigue, Tessa Thompson, the actress portraying Valkyrie, made an intriguing comment about her character’s relationship with Captain Marvel.
I, you know, the heart wants what it wants. I don’t… I can’t speak yet to Val. She hasn’t had a ton of time to focus too squarely on her love life since she’s been besought with a lot of kingly duties
Indeed, Thompson has never explicitly confirmed her character’s sexual orientation as straight. Her responses to Valkyrie’s preferences have been somewhat elusive. This ambiguity has sparked increased curiosity among fans, leading them to speculate about the nature of the relationship between Carol and Valkyrie, particularly following Valkyrie’s cameo in ‘The Marvels.’
On the flip side, it’s entirely plausible that Captain Marvel and Valkyrie share a deep friendship forged through shared experiences, especially during the tumultuous five years between the Snap and the Blip. However, the events in ‘The Marvels’ complicate the notion that their connection is purely platonic.
Despite the ambiguity surrounding Carol’s sexual preferences, the narrative unfolds with a revelation about Danvers being technically married to Prince Yan of Aladna during her past life on that planet—adding another layer to her story.
Despite the prince’s attractive qualities—being handsome, charming, brave, and remarkably understanding—it was evident that Carol harbored no romantic feelings towards him. This became apparent when she hesitated to visit Aladna upon learning of Dar-Benn’s targeting of the planet. With Carol not falling for the charming prince, the likelihood of her having a different sexual preference becomes significantly high. However, it’s also plausible that romance simply isn’t on the horizon for Captain Marvel, recognizing the universe’s pressing need for her presence.
