‘The Matrix’ Is Waking Up Again, And Warner Bros Just Made It Official
Few franchises reshaped modern science fiction the way ‘The Matrix’ did when it first hit screens, blending martial arts spectacle with heady philosophy about free will and simulated reality. The saga built a devoted fanbase across three sequels, even as the follow ups struggled to match the cultural impact of the original.
That devotion was tested hard in 2021, when The Matrix Resurrections became a notorious box office flop, grossing just 160 million dollars against a hefty 190 million dollar budget. The underwhelming return led plenty of fans to assume the series had quietly reached its end, with no clear plans for where the story could go next.
Now that assumption has been put to rest. A screenshot shared by industry insider Shinobi602 revealed that Warner Bros Discovery has officially confirmed a fifth installment in The Matrix franchise is currently in development, with the confirmation reportedly tied to a broader slate reveal from the studio. The post, which racked up more than 150,000 views within hours, pointed followers toward an investor relations document as the source of the news.
The announcement placed the long gestating Matrix project alongside other major reveals from Warner Bros, including Jim Carrey’s live action Jetsons movie and Matt Reeves’ Batman sequel. What sets this new chapter apart from every prior ‘Matrix’ film is a change behind the camera, since the Wachowski sisters will not return as directors this time. Drew Goddard, the writer director behind The Cabin in the Woods and The Martian, has been tapped to write and direct the new film, while Lana Wachowski stays on as executive producer.
Goddard has offered only glimpses into where things stand. He confirmed the project is still in the works, describing himself as being in his writing cave and promising news whenever he emerges, speaking in an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley for another project.

Warner Bros has been similarly careful about revealing plot specifics. When the sequel was first announced, Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman said Goddard approached the studio with a new idea the team believed could be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, honoring what Lana and Lilly began while offering his own unique perspective, according to a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
Casting remains a total mystery for now. Neither Keanu Reeves nor Carrie Anne Moss have signed on to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, and rumors linking Will Smith to the project have already been dismissed. Reports suggest the film remains in active development and is likely to arrive sometime after 2027, leaving fans with a long wait before any real details surface.
