Missed ‘Thunderbolts*’ in Theaters? The MCU’s Latest Adventure Now Has a Digital and Blu-ray Release Date

Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, the 36th film in the MCU, is set for home release. Fans can stream it on demand starting July 1, 2025, on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.
Physical copies, including 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD, arrive on July 29, packed with extras like deleted scenes, a gag reel, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and director Jake Schreier’s commentary. Collectible editions include a SteelBook with unique art and a Walmart-exclusive version with pop-up artwork. No Disney+ release date has been announced.
Directed by Jake Schreier with a script by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, Thunderbolts* features Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and a strong ensemble cast. The story centers on a team of antiheroes forced into a high-stakes mission after being trapped together.
The film’s ending revealed the group as the “New Avengers,” a title Marvel leaned into for post-release promotion.
The concept for a Thunderbolts team first surfaced in 2021, with Marvel confirming the project in June 2022. Schreier was tapped to direct, with Pearson as the initial writer. Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo later reworked the script.
Casting began in September 2022, with more actors joining through early 2023. Filming took place from February to June 2024 across Atlanta, Utah, and Kuala Lumpur, delayed slightly by the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes, which also led to some cast changes.
Thunderbolts* premiered in London on April 22, 2025, and opened in U.S. theaters on May 2, wrapping up MCU’s Phase Five. While it earned $380 million globally against a $180 million budget, it fell short of box office expectations, though it still ranked as the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2025.
Critics praised the movie for its compelling cast and character-focused story. Florence Pugh’s performance as the lead was a highlight, bringing energy to the team of misfits. The mix of action, humor, and emotional moments gave the film a unique feel compared to other MCU entries.
However, some reviewers noted a darker tone and a complex plot that could have been simpler. Audiences enjoyed the film, giving high marks for its performances and entertainment value.
The “New Avengers” reveal is exciting, but I hope future films keep the story clear and avoid overcomplicating the plot. It’s a solid step for Marvel’s next phase. What do you think of Thunderbolts* and its New Avengers direction? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
