The Official Trailer for ‘Finding Emily’ Is Here, and Angourie Rice and Spike Fearn Might Be Summer’s Most Charming Rom-Com Duo

The British romantic comedy has been quietly building anticipation since it was first announced under the working title ‘CC: Emily,’ and now audiences finally have a proper look at what to expect. ‘Finding Emily’ is the feature directorial debut of British filmmaker Alicia MacDonald, produced by Working Title Films and distributed by Focus Features worldwide. The studio pedigree alone should signal something special, given the film comes from the same producers behind ‘Love Actually’ and ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary.’

The story centers on a lovesick musician who is given the wrong number for his dream girl, with Rice playing the driven psychology student who aids him on a mission of the heart to track the girl down. Rice’s character is studying how romantic attachments cause madness, and this guy makes the perfect subject. It is the kind of premise that feels both classically rom-com and genuinely fresh, the sort of setup that earns its laughs from misunderstandings and hidden motivations rather than manufactured drama.

The official trailer wastes no time in selling the chemistry between its two leads. Focus Features has released the official trailer, poster, and stills for the upcoming romantic comedy, which arrives in theaters nationwide this summer. For Rice, who has moved between ‘Mare of Easttown,’ ‘The Nice Guys,’ and ‘Mean Girls,’ ‘Finding Emily’ offers a lead romantic-comedy showcase, while for Fearn, coming off ‘Aftersun,’ ‘The Batman,’ and ‘Alien: Romulus,’ the film adds another gear, folding music and comedy into a story built around longing, miscommunication, and youthful overreach.

The two stars have already been generating warm press ahead of the film’s release. Speaking to Refinery29 Australia, Rice reflected on the appetite for this kind of story, saying the industry is in a real moment for rom-coms, that people want comedy and romance because life is full of both. Fearn, who is also a musician in real life, provided music for the film, and the soundtrack is available to pre-order on vinyl through Silva Screen Records, featuring contributions from Blossoms, W. H. Lung, and Morgan Kibby.

Principal photography took place in Manchester between August and September 2024, giving the film a deeply British texture that feels right at home alongside the Working Title legacy. Minnie Driver, herself no stranger to the genre, rounds out the cast as the Dean. The film also carries the tagline “Looking for love, finding chaos,” which about sums up both the plot and the chaotic energy the trailer radiates.

‘Finding Emily’ is set to open in U.S. theaters on August 28, with Universal Pictures International releasing it in U.K. cinemas on May 22. The staggered rollout means British audiences will get there first, though given the trajectory of the buzz, it is hard to imagine the wait will feel too long anywhere else.

Whether you are a longtime rom-com devotee or a recent convert, let us know in the comments whether you think Angourie Rice and Spike Fearn have what it takes to make ‘Finding Emily’ the feel-good film of the summer.
