Noah Wyle is having a career moment few actors ever get. The star of HBO Max’s ‘The Pitt’ recently won his second consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for playing Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, joining a small group of actors to win for a show’s first 2 seasons.

The honors keep coming. Wyle recently revealed that People named him its 2026 Sexiest Man Alive, sharing the news on the October 27 episode of Amy Poehler’s podcast, ‘Good Hang‘.

During that same conversation, Wyle shared a surprising story from his childhood. He recalled meeting Eddie Murphy when he was just 9 years old, back when Murphy was a star on ‘Saturday Night Live’.

Young Wyle asked the comedian for an autograph and told him he enjoyed his work on the show. Murphy responded by asking what a kid his age was doing up so late. When Wyle laughed nervously and asked again, Murphy brushed him off with an expletive-filled rejection. Wyle told the story with plenty of humor, and he and Poehler, herself an ‘SNL’ alum, laughed through the conversation.

Rather than holding a grudge, Wyle turned the encounter into a personal rule. He explained that he now always signs autographs, especially for young fans. He said he signs especially fast whenever a 9-year-old asks him for one, a habit he traces directly to his brush with Murphy. It’s a lighthearted reminder of how much a brief interaction with a celebrity can mean to a child.

Murphy was still early in his career at the time, with his film breakthroughs in ’48 Hrs.’ and ‘Trading Places’ just getting started. His side of the encounter has not been made public. The story has an unexpectedly sweet follow-up at home. For his birthday last year, Wyle’s 10-year-old daughter, Frances, gave him a printed picture of Murphy with a handwritten note claiming to be the comedian’s autograph.

She even made up a story about meeting Murphy with her mother to get the signature. The playful gift, complete with a misspelled version of Murphy’s name, now hangs framed in Wyle’s office. It’s a fitting twist on a childhood disappointment, turning an awkward memory into a family joke.

Wyle’s warmth toward fans comes after decades in the spotlight. He first became a household name as Dr. John Carter on NBC’s ‘ER’, earning Emmy nominations every year from 1995 to 1999 alongside co-stars including George Clooney and Julianna Margulies.

His return to medical drama with ‘The Pitt’ has been a huge success. Since premiering in 2025, the show has earned 38 Emmy nominations across 2 seasons, including a win for Outstanding Drama Series that also gave Wyle an Emmy as an executive producer.

Wyle was also nominated this year for directing an episode of ‘The Pitt’, showing how much his role has grown behind the camera. The show’s third season is set to premiere on HBO Max in January 2027.

Between his Emmy wins, his Sexiest Man Alive title, and his popular podcast appearance, Wyle is enjoying one of the best stretches of his career. His Eddie Murphy story, meanwhile, shows a down-to-earth side that fans have embraced.

What do you think of Noah Wyle's rule about signing autographs for young fans?
