‘The Power’: All Known Filming Locations
Amazon Prime Video loves adapting New York Times bestsellers into TV shows. The newest such show is The Power, an adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s bestselling novel of the same name. Teenage women suddenly get the power to produce electrical shocks that can stun or kill at will.
The power appears in young women worldwide, so naturally, the show depicted the change in global gender power dynamics across the globe. The series nearly started production in 2019 but was delayed for several reasons, and even the filming locations were changed. So, without further ado, here are all known filming locations for The Power.
What is The Power about?
As I’ve mentioned in the introduction, The Power is an Amazon Prime Video original series based on the fictional dystopian novel of the same name, written by Naomi Alderman. Alderman is working with Raelle Tucker, Sarah Quintrell, and Claire Wilson as the show’s co-creators, which will follow the novel’s plot tightly.
The premise of The Power is simple, yet it opens up so many questions that intrigue the viewer/reader right from the start. The story is set in a dystopian world like ours, but with one major twist.
Teenage women worldwide start developing ‘the power’ that allows them to produce strong electrical shocks at will. At first, the power started manifesting as a tingling sensation around their collarbones but grew stronger until they could shoot electric bolts out of their fingertips and use them to stun or kill.
As their powers progressed, the young women learned they could help to awaken the power in older women as well – which is where the power dynamic in the world started changing. What would happen if women had the power advantage over men? What would happen if women were the prevalent gender in all positions of power?
That’s the starting premise of The Power, but as the story progresses, you’ll learn that there’s so much more to this narrative than meets the eye when you simply check out the premise.
On that note, let’s check out where the show was filmed.
The Power filming locations
The production and principal photography for The Power was scheduled to start in late 2019 in Georgia, US. However, before it began, Georgia implemented new abortion laws, which prompted many filmmakers – including the creators of The Power – to pull out and seek other filming locations.
The Power was filmed in several countries worldwide – but Georgia wasn’t a filming location for them anymore. Another setback came with the COVID-19 pandemic, pushing production even further, which is why we’re getting the show’s first season just now, in 2023.
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
As many shows now opt to do, Vancouver’s metropolitan area, as well as British Columbia, Canada in general, was one of the filming locations for the Power, according to the show’s IMDb page. In fact, interestingly, IMDb only listed British Columbia for the show’s filming locations despite many reports of other locations, but I’m getting ahead of myself.
As for Vancouver, it’s a beautiful Canadian city known for its versatility regarding the landscape that surrounds it, which is why it’s such a desirable filming location for many productions.
The Bridge Studios, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
The second location listed on The Power’s IMDb page is also in British Columbia, Canada, but instead of Vancouver, this one is located in a smaller town called Burnaby.
Burnaby is the home of The Bridge Studios, located at 2400 Boundary Road, and it is said to be a major filming location used for the creation of The Power. Not the electrical shocks, but the show.
Fairford & Lechlade, UK
According to reports, Fairford and Lechlade are two smaller towns in the United Kingdom chosen to replace Georgia after the show’s creators decided not to film there. Those same reports stated that Leslie Mann, Tim Robbins, and other stars from The Power were seen on the set.
Fairford is a beautiful, small market town in Gloucestershire, England, known for its picturesque architecture, greenery, and the Cotswold hills laying atop the River Coin. Its population is around 3500 people, making it a small but wonderful spot in England.
On the other hand, Lechlade is possibly an even smaller town located around the same area in Gloucestershire, England, but instead of the River Coin, it lies on the famous River Thames. It makes the small town a center of all kinds of river activities, such as fishing, kayaking, and even camping, and simply enjoying nature.
Bawdsey, England
Fairford and Lechlade aren’t the only small English towns where The Power was filmed. According to reports, the cast and crew of the show were seen in Bawdsey, England, as well – a small town and civil parish in Suffolk, England. Those reports say that Bawdsey will play the ‘role’ of Toronto in the series and that filming in the area took several weeks.
Bawdsey is a tiny settlement with a population of 276 at the 2011 Census, but its natural and historical significance is huge. The most notable sights in Bawdsey are the Bawdsey Manor, and Bawdsey Cliff, which is marked as a Site of Special Scientific Interest as the most significant exposure to Red Crag in England.
South London, England, UK
Naturally, the largest studios and productions in the UK are usually set in London. Hence, it’s no wonder that the production crew of The Power settled in South London as well – specifically, the race track around the National Sports Centre at Crystal Palace Park.
It’s said that such a large production hasn’t been seen in Crystal Palace Park since Michael Caine and The Italian Job were filmed there. It’s unclear what kind of role the location will have in the show, but it’ll be significant since dozens of trailers, trucks, and crew members set up camp there.
Walvis Bay, Namibia
Last but not least, at least some scenes for The Power were shot in Africa – specifically, the entrance to the city of Walvis Bay, Namibia. The beachfront town was used as a filming location in late 2021, where a portion of the road near Aphrodite Beach was closed for filming purposes.
Walvis Bay is the second largest Namibian city and is an absolutely breathtaking spot filled with diverse flora and fauna that includes whales, seals, pelicans, dolphins, flamingos, and so much more. I’ll be thrilled to witness the location in the show!
Where can I watch The Power?
The Power is an original Amazon Prime Video; hence, you can find it exclusively on the streaming platform. The first three episodes premiered on March 31, 2023; an additional episode will come out weekly until the ninth season-final episode premieres on May 12, 2023.
