The Role of Max in ‘Dark Matter’ and What the Character Adds to the Dessen Family Story
Max in ‘Dark Matter’ is the twin son of Jason and Daniela Dessen, and he is no longer living. He is not part of the multiverse machinery that drives the plot. His presence shapes how the Dessens grieve and how the alternate Jason can be exposed.
‘Dark Matter’ is based on Blake Crouch’s novel, and he serves as showrunner and executive producer who wrote or co-wrote six of the first season’s nine episodes. Max is one of the clearest signs of how the adaptation expanded on its source. This guide explains who he is, where he first appears and why he matters.
Max Dessen and the Birth Certificate in Episode Three
Viewers first meet Max when the alternate Jason, known as Jason 2, sits in the original Jason’s office and looks through old documents. He finds Charlie’s birth certificate and notices a second one attached to it, stamped with the name Maximillian Dessen and the same birthday of October 7.
The moment lands as a surprise because Max does not ring a bell for viewers until episode three. That episode reveals the existence of a mysterious child who was never mentioned before in the series.
The audience learns more in episode four. While trapped in the box with Amanda, Jason tells her how Max died. Max had heart abnormalities even before birth, and he could not withstand the surgeries needed to correct them, so he did not survive the third one.
Max in the Novel Compared With the Series
Readers of the book will not remember Max, and there is a reason for that. In the novel, Jason and Daniela have only one son, Charlie.
Max does not exist in the book, and the entire twin storyline was created solely for the adaptation. He is also not the only addition, since Blair and Detective Mason are original creations for the show as well.
One outlet described Max as arguably the biggest change the series made from novel to screen. Because Crouch wrote the novel and also created the series, the change comes from the source author himself rather than from outside the project.
Charlie’s Twin and the Dessen Family Tradition
Each year Daniela tells Charlie the story of their birth, explaining that Max was a fighter and the first of the two to be born, and that the brothers were inseparable. The ritual gives the loss a human shape that the plot mechanics alone could not.
The family has a tradition of going outside to sit at Max’s tree on his birthday. They planted that tree in the backyard and mixed some of his ashes into the soil.
The tradition becomes a plot point in episode four. Jason 2 is not there for it because he is off exploring the multiverse through the box with Leighton, and Daniela and Charlie cannot believe he is absent. Not knowing the family’s customs for honoring Max on the twins’ birthday is one of the biggest weak points in his disguise.
Why Max Dessen Matters to the Multiverse Story
Knowing that Jason and Daniela had another son who passed away changes everything about the family’s story. It gives Jason 2 another chance to slip up and gives the original Jason more reason to find his way home.
Midway through the first season, the twin storyline also prompted questions. One outlet asked whether there is some universe where Max is alive but Charlie is not, and noted that little was known about the circumstances of his death. The series later answers part of that curiosity, since Jason’s travels take him to a world where Max is still alive.
The story has continued beyond that point. The second season runs ten episodes, starting on August 28 and ending on October 30. Apple describes it as picking up with the Dessens in a quiet life that is interrupted when they are forced to run once again. Does the version of Max that the series gave the Dessens make Jason’s fight to get home feel more personal to you, or did the novel’s single-son story work better?
