The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural teen drama TV series that aired on our TV screens from 2009 to 2017. The series was adapted from the book series of the same name written by Lisa Jane Smith. The Vampire Diaries gained instant success from its first season and continued to delight the fans for half of the decade. The show aired for eight seasons and ended with a proper ending, however, there were rumors of the show gaining the ninth season. The Vampire Diaries since its ending in 2017, spiked multiple different rumors about the show’s continuation, however, fans can drop their excitement. The Vampire Diaries Season 9 will not happen – season 9 was never actually renewed, there were only rumors and a few posts from showrunners online when they talked about it. It is safe to say that season 9 of The Vampire Diaries was canceled.

Short Introduction To Vampire Diaries

As we already mentioned, the Vampire Diaries is a supernatural teen drama television series that aired for eight seasons on commercial TV, CW. The series was developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, and the main story was adapted from the book series of the same name written by Lisa Jane Smith.

The series is set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls and follows the life of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a teenage girl who just lost her parents due to a car accident. Shortly after coming to town, Elena falls in love with Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), a 162-year-old vampire. She does not know that she came into the town which has a huge history of supernatural elements, and her life gets even more complicated after meeting Stefan’s mysterious brother, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). Damon’s plan is to bring back his past love, Katherine Pierce, a vampire who looks just like Elena. There are few supporting characters that mostly have their own storylines like Elena’s brother Jeremy, her aunt Jenna, and her friends Bonnie, Caroline, Matt Donovan, and Tyler Lockwood.

Town’s politics are mainly to prevent supernatural threats like vampires, werewolves, witches, hybrids, and ghosts. Of course, from there, everything started to complicate.

The show’s popularity was absolutely insane from its beginnings – the pilot episode of the show that aired on CW most the most-watched pilot episode in the network’s history. The vampire trend was going strong in those years, and stats and viewership of the Vampire Diaries only confirmed it. Of course, the Twilight trend helped a lot, but the Vampire Diaries cast and plot glued viewers to their TVs for years.

The show won a lot of popular awards like the People Choice Awards, Teens Choice Awards, and more, and expanded its popularity all over the world. The show literally became part of the popular culture of the 2010s years. The show produced some spin-offs as well – the highly popular TV show the Originals was really successful and followed the story of vampire-werewolf Klaus Mikaelson that first appeared in Vampire Diaries.

The show ended after the 8th season and finished with a proper closure. However, after the ending of the series, rumors about the show’s continuation started flowing around, and even showrunners started hinting about the show’s revival.

Are Vampire Diaries Getting Season 9?

The rumors about Vampire Diaries’ continuation were sparked by the fans of the show and showrunners who talked about wanting to possibly film a season that would include characters and consequences after the events of season 8.

Season 8 was shorter than the previous season with only 16 episodes filmed, and the purpose of the season was to put an end to big storylines that were still ongoing. Season 8 saw our main characters fighting Katherine Pierce one last time, and trying to stop her intentions of destroying Mystic Falls. Bonnie, who is already established as a witch, stops her and uses her powers to destroy Hell.

Stefan uses the cure for his brother Damon and consequently saves his life. Damon turns into a human being and Stefan starts to age pretty fast. At the end of his life, Stefan sends the message to his wife Caroline and tells her he will love her forever.

After Stefan’s sacrifice, Bonnie uses her powers to wake Elena from her sleeping curse, which she fell under at the end of season 6, and reunites with Damon. After saying goodbye to Stefan, everyone goes on their way to live their lives how they always wanted. The show ends with Elena and Damon dying of old age, and Elena reuniting with her family in the afterlife.

The Vampire Diaries had a pretty good closure if you consider many shows never get to that point, and the fans were mostly fine with everything that transpired in the finale. They saw their fan-favorite Nina Dobrev come back to the show one last time, after her leaving in season 6, and good closure for her and the rest of the characters.

There was speculation that the show will come back for its ninth season in 2021, then it moved to the date in 2022. In the end, CW never renewed the show. Trailers that popped up on the internet were fan-made trailers that were made years ago, and the lockdown popularity of the Vampire Diaries also had an effect on the said rumors.

Personally, the whole thing about the season 9 revival does not make any sense. The show had a decent closure and showed us a little epilogue of the characters, and the big storylines that the show had were resolved. The Vampire Diaries can only continue if the showrunners decide to create and pitch another Vampire Diaries show that follows the same characters from the show in the aftermath of the season 8 ending or just go for a prequel show that follows the plot before the events of the Vampire Diaries TV show.

All in all, the Vampire Diaries never got its renewal for the continuation of the original storyline of the show. However, knowing today’s trends of reviving and rebooting TV shows and movie franchises, we would not be surprised if the same happened in the future for Vampire Diaries. There are still fans who love these characters and stories and we don’t doubt they will religiously follow any show connected to The Vampire Diaries.
