The Watcher vs Thanos: Who Would Win?

Share:

Cosmic entities are always intriguing and Marvel Comics has its fair share of such characters. They are generally extremely powerful, and they range from being heroes to villains, to completely neutral. This article is going to compare two of Marvel’s cosmic characters – Uatu the Watcher and Thanos – one neutral character, and the other one of Marvel’s biggest villains. We are going to determine which one of them would win in a fight.

The Watchers are generally stronger than Thanos without any enhancements, so Uatu would defeat Thanos if the latter were to approach the fight without any weapons. On the other hand, Thanos would defeat Uatu with relative ease if he used the Infinity Gauntlet in battle.

Our comparison is going to be divided into three sections. The first is going to bring an overview of the two characters, which will include a list of their powers and abilities, which you’ll be able to compare. Finally, we’re going to bring you a detailed analysis of the two characters to determine which one would win in a direct clash.

The Watcher and his powers

Uatu the Watcher was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and he first appeared in The Fantastic Four #13 (April 1963). He is a member of the Watchers, an alien race that was stationed in space to monitor the activities of other races. Uatu is the Watcher assigned to observe the Earth and its Solar System.

The 1985 edition of the Official Manual of the Marvel Universe compared Uatu’s scale of power to that of Galactus, Strange, Odin, and Zeus.

Intelligence

Uatu received a very extensive education in his youth in his homeworld. He has been studying the Earth’s solar system and its sentient beings for millions of years. Uatu’s superhumanly complex intelligence allows him to monitor activities throughout Earth’s solar system simultaneously.

He has acquired extraordinary knowledge of the history of sentient beings on “conventional” Earth and on the many alternate Earths. Uatu also studies the Earths of alternative realities. With the permission of the timekeepers, he possesses a portal through which he can observe alternate realities.

Immortality

Uatu can turn his body into an unknown form of energy while he retains his sensitivity to travel through hyperspace and then return to his physical form.

Reinforced by the treatment with “delta rays”, Uatu possesses virtual immortality, although he can die by losing the will to live and in a publication, he says that he can send someone to Limbo.

Psionic abilities

As a member of the Watchers race, Uatu possesses vast psionic abilities that have been further developed through training.

These abilities include flight, telepathy, energy manipulation powers, power denial force field projection, illusion casting, the ability to psionically alter your appearance at will and highly advanced cosmic senses that allow you to be aware of countless Earth events.

The Watchers can increase their strength with cosmic psionic energy if they wish; however, they tend to minimize their physical activities.

Weaponry

His home in the Blue Area of the Moon contains a vast array of weapons, artifacts, and technology created by various alien races from across the universe.

Thanos and his powers

Thanos was created by Jim Starlin and made his debut in The Invincible Iron Man #55 (1973) and has since become one of the best-known villains in the Marvel universe.

General abilities

Thanos is a mutant member of the race of superhumans known as the Titan Eternals. The character possesses abilities common to the Eternals but is further amplified through a combination of his mutant-Eternal heritage, bionic amplification, mysticism, and power bestowed by the abstract entity, Death.

He has demonstrated enormous strength, speed, reflexes, agility, endurance, superhuman durability, invulnerability, and immortality. He is capable of flying, teleporting to various parts of the universe, using telekinesis, telepathy, he also has the ability to breathe in outer space and can manipulate matter.

Energy manipulation

Thanos can absorb, manipulate, and project large amounts of cosmic energy. He can project devastating rays from her eyes, hands, and even from his entire body.

Fighting skills

Thanos is an accomplished hand-to-hand combatant, who has been trained in the art of war on Titan. Thanos is also a master strategist and uses several spaceships, at least three under the name “Sanctuary”, as a base of operations.

Intelligence

Thanos is a super genius in virtually every known field of advanced science and has created technology that far exceeds contemporary Earth science. He often employs a transport chair capable of space flight, force field projection, teleportation, time travel, and movement through alternate universes.

The Watcher vs Thanos: Who would win?

And now for the most important and interesting section of our article – the analysis. Here, we are going to use what we have found out about these two characters and analyze how all these facts would (or would not) help them in a fight against each other. Let us continue.

The approach to this comparison is actually twofold. Namely, if Uatu and Thanos were to fight without any additional weapons or enhancements, the Watcher would certainly be more powerful. Thanos is, as we know, very strong and is stronger than most, but the Watchers are simply on a much higher level and Uatu would be able to simply teleport Thanos into the heart of a star and kill him.

On the other hand, if Thanos were to have the Infinity Gauntlet, for example, his strongest and most famous weapon, even Uatu, with all of his powers, wouldn’t be able to stop him. This is why we had to analyze both scenarios in this case.

All of this means that there isn’t a definite conclusion here. On a general level, the Watchers are stronger than Thanos and Uatu would be able to deal with the Mad Titan with relative ease. On the other hand, even Uatu would not stand a chance against Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet, and that is our conclusion for this match-up.
