The Wonder is a new awesome Netflix original movie that’ll hit the platform this month. It will be a period drama set in the 19th-century Irish Midlands, starring one of the biggest rising stars in Hollywood, Florence Pugh. Seeing that the production of an Ireland/UK/US collaboration, fans wonder, was the movie actually filmed in Ireland, where the plot is set?
Don’t worry; we got you covered. Here’s everything we know so far about The Wonder filming locations, plot, cast and crew, release date, and so much more.
What is The Wonder about?
The Wonder, as I mentioned, is a period drama based on a novel of the same name. The book was written by Emma Donoghue, an Irish-Canadian writer who also wrote The Room, which inspired the Brie Larson-led film Room.
The plot is set in The Irish Midlands in 1862 and is a great piece about the conflict of religion and reason, the community and the individual, and more.
Florence Pugh portrays Lib Wright, an English nurse who is invited to visit a small, rural Irish village and try to help Anna O’Donnel. She is an eleven-year-old girl who completely stopped eating – four months ago.
Wright can’t seem to grasp how that’s possible, but pilgrims and tourists start flooding the village to witness the ‘fasting girl’ – who they believe could actually be a saint. They say a saint is “surviving on manna from heaven,” while Lib Wright tries to reason and find palpable answers. Is it really divine intervention, or are more ominous things doing the unimaginable?
The Wonder Cast & Crew
Way back in April 2021, it was announced that Florence Pugh (Midsommar, Black Widow) would play the titular role in a psychological thriller, The Wonder. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Emma Donoghue, who is also working on the project as a screenwriter and advisor.
Alice Birch and Sebastian Lelio are helping Donoghue with writing duties, while Lelio is also set to direct the film. His chief of cinematography will be Ari Wegner, whereas Matthew Herbert is taking the helm on the music.
The executive producers of the film are Len Blavatnik, Danny Cohen, and Emma Dodghue herself. Ed Guiney, Tessa Ross, Juliette Howell, and Andrew Lowe serve as producers, while the production companies involved in the project are Element Pictures, House Productions, Screen Ireland, and Access Entertainment.
The main cast is as follows:
- Florence Pugh as Lib Wright
- Tom Burke as William Byrne
- Kíla Lord Cassidy as Anna O’Donnell
- Elaine Cassidy as Rosaleen O’Donnell
- Caolán Byrne as Malachy O’ Donnell
- Niamh Algar as Kitty
- Toby Jones as Dr. McBrearty
- Ciarán Hinds
- Dermot Crowley
- Brían F. O’Byrne as John Flynn
- David Wilmot as Seán Ryan
- Josie Walker as Sister Ryan
Other cast members include Dermot Crowley, Mary Murray, Caolan Byrne, and others.
Where was Netflix’s The Wonder filmed?
All the filming locations have not been disclosed yet, and the movie’s IMDb page suggests that the countries of origin are Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. However, the only confirmed filming location is Ireland, so it’s quite possible that the entire movie was shot only there.
It makes sense, though, as the plot is revolving around a rural village in The Irish Midlands, and the production companies involved are situated in Ireland.
Florence Pugh herself confirmed that the filming location was in Ireland with a cool Instagram post of the beautiful Irish landscape, captioned: “Less traffic, greener hills, great Guinness. A different kind of Hollywood… 💚🍀”
You can’t really tell where in Ireland this is exactly unless you’re a local and you know where that little Hollywood sign is situated. However, confirmation came later that the shooting is taking place in County Wicklow, a beautiful, picturesque area in Eastern Ireland, just south of Dublin.
The area is known for its astonishing landscape, which includes breathtaking mountains, the Irish Sea coastline, a wonderful walking trail through Wicklow Mountains National Park full of glacial lakes, rivers, a forested valley, and so much more. No wonder Pugh enjoyed it so much!
When will The Wonder be released?
Wonder is set to be released on Netflix on November 16, 2022. However, you can get a chance to watch it before, since it’s currently on a limited theatrical release in certain cinemas. The theatrical release was on November 2, and will probably last until the movie hits Netflix.
As for the audience reception, even before the November 2 release, some fans had the chance to see it. The first screening was at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2022, followed by another one at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival on September 13, 2022. The first European screening was at the 70th San Sebastian International Film festival on September 21, 2022.
