What is the plot of The World God Only Knows?

Now that we’ve told you how you should watch the whole series, let us quickly revise the plot of each of the segments. The main anime series follows Keima Katsuragi, a second-year high school student and an avid bishōjo video game player. On the Internet he is known as the “God of Conquest”, due to his legendary abilities to “conquer” any 2D girl in video games.

However, in his real-life school, Keima is known as otamegane, putting the words together, otaku and “megane”. At the beginning of the series, Keima receives an e-mail, in which he offers him a challenge to pick up girls, signed by Skull Dokuro. He accepts taking it as if it were a challenge for a new bishōjo video game, since it is sent to his own PFP (a portable console, parody of the PSP) with the heading “Dear God of Conquest”.

After accepting, the sky darkens, and a demon appears, Elsie de Lute Irma, normally called Elsie. She asks for her cooperation in helping her capture the runaway spirits of the underworld, also called loose souls. These spirits hide within the girls’ hearts, so Elsie tells her that the only method to force the spirits out is to “conquer” the girls’ hearts, making them fall in love.

Horrified by the idea, Keima refuses after clarifying to Elsie that he is only interested in “conquering” 2D girls and that he abhors reality. However, the e-mail was actually a contract and by accepting it, they put a collar on both of them, which will cut off their heads if they don’t fulfill the contract.

Keima will have to help Elsie using her knowledge of the games to conquer, fall in love and fill the void in the hearts of the possessed girls in order to purify them. During the first arc different “captures” of the spirits are shown. Most appear in the manga, in the anime some are only mentioned to have been made and some only appeared in the Light Novel.

During this arc, other demons will appear that collaborate in the capture and more about the world will be explained. In the second arc, the threat of Vintage appears, a group from hell that threatens the heaven-sent ones who concluded the previous hell.

Keima must find them to save them and protect the world. It is the one that is broadcast in the anime in the third season. The third and final arc of the manga, Keima’s consciousness travels to the past to prepare for future events.

As for the OVA episodes, the first OVA – “4 Girls and an Idol” – Chihiro forms a rock band with her friends Elsie, Ayumi and Miyako. But their music is terrible and needs practice. Elsie suggests they start a light music club after watching an anime about it.

They try hard to get a club room, but Kodama-san, the head of the art clubs, gives them a challenge: if they get 100% on the next English tests, they will get a club room, otherwise they will have to do extra classwork.

Chihiro initially wants to give up on the club idea, but when Kanon comes back to school to take her tests and tells the band that she will be performing at the school’s fall dance festival, she changes her mind and wants the band to perform on stage with Kanon. To help them, Elsie drags Keima in to teach her, Chihiro, Ayumi and later Kanon for their English test.

Keima refuses, since most of the girls were his previous conquests, but reluctantly agrees after Elsie assures him that they do not remember. However, Chihiro, Ayumi, and Kanon act awkward and embarrassed every time he teaches them, but he manages to give them helpful hints for their tests.

When the results are in, Miyako, Chihiro and Ayumi manage to get 100%, except for Elsie, but a joyful Kodama allows the club to be formed because Keima got 99% because he was bothered by the girls’ behavior. Kanon also got 100% but was happier to have made new friends. Now that they have their own club room, Chihiro’s band, The 2-B Pencils, starts practicing.

The Tenri Arc begins when summer vacation begins, but Keima’s plan to play nonstop is interrupted by his mother to meet her friend Mrs. Ayukawa and her shy daughter Tenri, his childhood friend from ten years ago whom Keima no longer remembers. Elsie senses a spirit in Tenri, but Keima is not interested and just wants to play. When Tenri shows Keima a secret tunnel under the theater, he begins to remember his past with Tenri.

As they walk through the tunnel, Keima recalls an incident that happened ten years ago during a trip to the beach. Tenri and Diana reveal that after that incident, creatures called Weiss (which Keima later learns are evil spirits) appeared around him and Tenri until Diana helped them escape to the theater after Keima agreed to let Diana take over her body. The next day, Keima and Elsie are surprised to find that the Ayukawas are their new neighbors.

Elsie heads off to an audition where the winner gets to play the role of Kanon’s little sister on her children’s show TV Weather Girl Magical Girl Kanon. When she is denied entry because she is too old, Elsie senses a ghost and heads to the TV station to find Kanon, who has been turned into a child. As she flies to the roof and confronts the ghost, she sings her songs, which return her body to normal and weaken the ghost, allowing Elsie to capture it.

Relieved, Kanon faints and later wakes up to find herself back in the studio. Kozue, who initially believed it was all a dream, reveals that she remembers everything, whereupon Kanon tells her to keep it a secret and choose her as her little sister. Elsie sets off home with the ghost, only to pursue another who has also turned her into a child.
