Ever since the official trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder has been released, Marvel fans aren’t stopping babbling about everything that the trailer has revealed about the 29th MCU entry. From the first look at Christian Bale’s main villain Gorr the God Butcher, to finally seeing Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster in action as Mighty Thor.

In a recent interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar+), director Taika Waititi talked about Jane’s role in the movie. Waititi confirmed that the movie will closely follow the source material, in which the character suffered breast cancer, and the only cure was to possess the power of Thor by wielding Mjolnir, which is now back in one piece after Hela shattered it in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. Total Film also revealed a new exclusive still from the movie, which you can check out below along with Waititi’s full statement.

“We stick pretty closely to Jane’s storyline, and what happened to Jane… because that was such an influence on the film. We’re trying to take the best parts of that. And also, it’s really fun, the idea that Thor [has] got Stormbreaker, that big axe, and now his hammer’s back and it’s in the hands of someone else. It’s no longer his hammer. It’s the idea that someone’s taking his place. I think a lot of fans are gonna potentially assume, ‘Oh, OK, this is the passing on of the torch’… I’m not privy to any plans Marvel has for the future, but I don’t think that’s the case.” — Taika Waititi for Total Film (via GamesRadar+)

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, and Natalie Portman, Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released on July 8, 2022.
