Few on-screen partnerships in modern blockbusters have grown as visibly as Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya’s in the ‘Dune’ franchise. As Paul Atreides and Chani, they’ve anchored Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novels, and their story is heading into its most dramatic chapter yet.

‘Dune: Part Three’ hits theaters and IMAX on December 18, with select insider screenings starting December 14. Villeneuve co-wrote the screenplay with Brian K. Vaughan, and the film adapts ‘Dune Messiah’, the second novel in Herbert’s series.

As the final film approaches, Chalamet is looking back on what the journey has meant. In a new interview with The New York Times, he reflected on how most people grow up alongside friends from their childhood or teenage years.

‘Dune: Part Three’ Is Officially the Shortest Chapter in Denis Villeneuve’s Trilogy

With Zendaya, he explained, it was different and special. The two began working together right at the end of their youth and the start of adulthood, and he suggested that timing gave their bond on the franchise its own unique weight.

Zendaya has described the series in strikingly similar terms. Speaking at a trailer launch event in March, she told People that the ‘Dune’ movies have meant so much to her over the years.

She also noted that she has essentially grown up through her entire 20s while making them. Coming from both stars, those comments paint the franchise as a defining stretch of their lives as well as their careers.

Chalamet has also made it clear that this chapter carries extra meaning for him. Speaking at a Variety and CNN town hall at the University of Texas moderated by Matthew McConaughey, he said it was his last time making a ‘Dune’ film, so he wanted to treat it as sacred.

He described the new film as the eeriest one yet and a big swing. He added that he didn’t want to be complacent about a single moment and approached the role with more intensity than he did in the first 2 films.

According to GamesRadar+, Chalamet also said he felt more freedom and a better working rhythm with Villeneuve this time. He credited Oscar Isaac’s advice about playing his role in a heightened, Shakespearean way with encouraging him to take more liberties.

On screen, the relationship between Paul and Chani is set to be pushed to the limit. In the new film, Paul rules as a ruthless Emperor and must face the consequences of his reign as old allies return, new threats emerge, and a conspiracy unfolds around Chani.

Chalamet has teased that he’s playing an older Paul, someone shaped by years of leadership and the weight that comes with it. A trailer has already shown Robert Pattinson’s Scytale and Zendaya’s Chani trying to kill Paul, which adds a heavy layer to the pair’s reflections on growing up together.

Joining the 2 leads is a large ensemble cast. Jason Momoa plays Hayt, a ghola of Duncan Idaho, while Florence Pugh returns as Irulan and Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica. Anya Taylor-Joy plays Alia Atreides, with Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, and Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Mohiam. Principal photography took place at Origo Film Studios in Budapest, with additional filming at Liwa Oasis in Abu Dhabi.

With Chalamet calling this his final ‘Dune’ film, his comments about Zendaya feel like an early goodbye to one of the most important collaborations of his career. For fans who have followed the pair since the first film, the final chapter promises to be about much more than spice and sandworms.
