The final showdown between Izana Kurokawa’s Tenjiku and Toman is underway in the anime, but while we have discussed several important fights and clashes there, we haven’t really talked about the principal antagonist of this thrilling Tokyo Revengers arc – Izana Kurokawa, who is the ruthless leader of Tenjiku that everyone’s afraid of. Izana’s story is absolutely interesting and everything that’s happened to him made him into the feared leader we saw in the series. But why is everyone afraid of him? In this article, we are going to tell you about Izana’s story, which will reveal why he is so feared, even among his gang members.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Izana Kurokawa is the leader of Tenjiku and is one of the series’ strongest and most feared characters by far.
  • He had a very troublesome and sad childhood full of disappointment, which left him a bitter and angry person.
  • That is why he became so feared, because he only wanted to satisfy his own needs, not discriminating between friends and foes in the process, which is why he is so feared by everyone.

Izana Kurokawa’s story is filled with disappointment and bitterness

Izana Kurokawa was the eighth president of the Black Dragons and the leader of Tenjiku, also being the main antagonist during the story arc of the same name. Izana was a not-too-tall boy with a normal physique; you can distinguish his hair, which tends towards a rather ‘bleached’ blonde, in fact, it may seem, at first glance, completely white, and his enormous purple eyes.

Izana is also the adoptive brother of Shinichiro, Emma, and Manjiro Sano, harboring enormous jealousy towards the latter, but more on that later. This is just a brief introduction to the character.

Well before meeting Shinichiro, however, during his adolescence, he spent part of his life in a reformatory home following his having cruelly beaten up some boys. There, he founded the ruthless S-62 Generation together with Mocchi, Mucho, Shion, and the Haitani brothers; they would later organize themselves in Tenjiku.

At the age of 8, he was abandoned in an orphanage, and there, he met Kakucho, with whom he formed a strong friendship and created a strong bond, which would last over time until Izana’s death. In fact, Izana ended up being shot as he jumped in front of the bullets that were intended for Kakucho, fired by the traitor Kisaki Tetta. Through flashbacks, we will also discover that Kakucho and Izana already thought about the creation of Tenjiku as children, based on the Asian myth “Journey to the West.”

And that is, more or less, the gist of his story. It tells us that he had a troublesome life, and it explains the source of his bitterness, which we are going to elaborate on in the upcoming sections.

Why was Izana considered bad?

Well, seeing his life story, we cannot really state that Izana was born evil. He was, in fact, a very benevolent and happy child, but with Mikey’s arrival, a series of events shaped him into the villainous maniac we see in the Tenjiku Arc. He became bad, or, to be more precise, he was molded into a bad person by all the life events that happened to him, including the orphanage, the Sano betrayal, the S-62 Generation, the gang wars, and so on.

He became bitter, and Kisaki ultimately manipulated him into becoming an evil gang lord, which, paired with the fact that he was exceptionally strong, made him a dangerous character feared by everyone and considered a true villain. But, his story is layered, and we have to consider numerous facts here, so when analyzing Izana and his role in the story, we simply advise you to be careful and consider all the relevant facts.

Why is Izana jealous of Mikey?

As we have explained above, Izana Kurokawa was the adoptive brother of Shinichiro, Emma, and Manjiro Sano, harboring enormous jealousy towards the latter (and to the public’s great surprise, he manages to get the better of Manjiro in combat, albeit for a short time) to such an extent to want his death; this was born from a particular event that marked him.

Namely, Izana and Shinichiro were an almost inseparable duo when they were young. Izana considered Shinichiro like an older brother, and Shinichiro loved Izana equally. One day, as a gift, he gave him the reins of the Black Dragon, making him the eighth president of the gang, but only under one condition, which was to pass it on to Shinichiro’s younger brother, Manjiro. So, he began to harbor a very strong feeling of hatred due to his jealousy.

Izana felt betrayed by Shinichiro, and he thought that Mikey had taken his position in Shinichiro’s eyes, which is why he was so jealous of him; although he did try to recreate Shinichiro in him later during the fight, this was more of a morbid moment than anything precise.

What is Izana’s personality type?

Now, people often wonder what personality type – according to the popular Myers–Briggs Type Indicator – Izana is. And while the author never really specified anything in the series, fans still often wonder about that and based on an analysis of his personality, we can make an estimate here. Based on that, Izana Kurokawa would be an INTJ personality, which – as officially described – indicates the following:

“The INTJ personality type is Introverted, iNtuitive, Thinking, and Judging, which means they are energized by time alone, focused on big picture ideas and concepts, led by logic and reason, and organized. This combination of personality preferences produces people who are analytical, innovative, and strategic. INTJs are comfortable with reason and problem-solving, and they enjoy applying themselves to projects that will increase efficiency. Though they tend to be more reserved, they are curious about the world around them and come to life in an environment of intellectual challenge and discussion.”

As you can see, this is a pretty good description of Izana’s personality, so it makes sense that he is classified as an INTJ personality.
