Few movie stars have built a reputation for being as relentlessly upbeat as Tom Cruise, and his latest viral moment only adds to the legend. The actor is currently deep in promotion mode for his next film, ‘Digger’, a dark comedy that marks his first collaboration with Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Somehow, even in the middle of that busy schedule, he still found time for an unplanned act of kindness.

‘Digger’ is a big swing for both men. Cruise stars as Digger Rockwell, described as “the most powerful man in the world,” who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he unleashed destroys everything. Warner Bros. has billed it as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions.”

Now, a short video has turned Cruise into the internet’s favorite surprise visitor. CoveredGeekly shared the clip on X, noting that the actor was going viral after checking on a random staff worker who looked sad but was actually just doomscrolling.

The footage, which appears to come from a security camera in a back-of-house area, carries an on-screen caption joking about doomscrolling at work when Tom Cruise decides it’s your day. In it, the employee sits hunched over with her back to him and her head down, looking every bit like someone having a rough shift.

Cruise tapped her on the arm, smiled warmly, and exchanged a few quick words, seemingly to lift her spirits, before the 2 shared a high five. As it turned out, however, she was simply scrolling on her phone.

The misunderstanding is what made the moment so shareable. Even so, the employee appeared both surprised and touched by the encounter, and many fans saw it as a rare, heartwarming gesture from a star who could have easily walked right past.

Not everyone online was fully charmed, of course. Some commenters joked that his PR team was in overdrive, a nod to the awards buzz building around his new film. But for most viewers, the clip landed as simply a funny, feel-good slice of celebrity life.

The timing couldn’t be better for Cruise. ‘Digger’ arrives in US theaters on October 2, and the project has been years in the making. Iñárritu first conceived the idea after completing ‘The Revenant’, and he began discussing it with Cruise back in 2019 while the actor was filming ‘Top Gun: Maverick’.

The film was shot in the United Kingdom for 6 months, working once again with Iñárritu’s longtime cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki in 35mm VistaVision. It’s also Iñárritu’s first English-language feature since ‘The Revenant’.

The ensemble is packed with talent. Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed and Emma D’Arcy all join Cruise in the cast. The screenplay comes from Iñárritu alongside Sabina Berman and his ‘Birdman’ collaborators Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone.

The movie represents a notable shift for an actor best known for death-defying stunts. It’s his first film since signing a deal with Warner Bros. to develop and produce theatrical releases, following his recent run in ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’.

It also follows a meaningful honor for the star. Cruise accepted an honorary Academy Award at the Governors Awards, where Iñárritu presented him with the prize onstage.

With his new film just days away from theaters, Cruise’s spontaneous check-in has given audiences an unexpectedly human glimpse of the star. Whether it was genuine concern or pure charm, one staffer’s ordinary shift definitely became unforgettable.
