Tom Holland is gearing up for one of the biggest moments of his career as he returns to the role of Peter Parker in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ the fourth chapter in his run as the web slinger. The comments came from Holland’s interview with Esquire, where the actor discussed his career, his return as Peter Parker in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ and his personal life. Alongside the film talk, one topic kept coming up, his relationship with longtime co-star and partner Zendaya.

Holland and Zendaya first met while working on ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ in 2016, with Zendaya playing Michelle Jones-Watson, also known as MJ, Peter Parker’s love interest in the Marvel films. What started as a professional partnership between two young actors eventually grew into a real life romance, though the pair kept things private for years before the relationship became public knowledge. Holland and Zendaya later got engaged over the holidays in 2024.

Now Holland is sharing fresh details about how their dynamic actually started. In the Esquire interview, he looked back on the moment Zendaya walked out of her ‘Homecoming’ audition room and how quickly everyone in that room knew she had the part. “Obviously, I was super excited at the prospect of working with her and getting to know her. She smashed her audition out the park and got the part before she’d even left the room. I remember when she closed the door to leave, producer Amy Pascal was immediately like, ‘Well, she’s getting the job,'” Holland said.

He didn’t stop there. Holland went on to describe why having Zendaya as a partner has made the pressures of fame easier to carry, calling their bond a source of real stability. “Our business can present very stressful situations and it’s really nice to have a bedrock of a relationship that will stand the test of time,” he said, adding that the two understand each other in ways outsiders simply can’t. “We can support each other in ways that only we can, because only we understand really what it’s like to live this life,” he explained.

Holland capped off the reflection with maybe his most candid line yet about what Zendaya means to him personally. “For me, I found my person. She’s my best friend, and I’m the happiest I ever have been when I’m with her, but I also have never felt so supported and safe, ever. Period,” he said.

The timing of these comments lines up with a particularly public stretch for the couple. Zendaya and Tom Holland made their first red carpet appearance together in four years at the Madrid premiere of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ on June 15, posing in matching outfits ahead of the film’s July 31 release. The appearance comes after months of speculation about the pair’s marital status, sparked when Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach let slip that the couple had secretly married.

Marriage rumors aside, it’s clear that Holland still considers Zendaya the steady center of his very public life. For two actors who met in an audition room nearly a decade ago, that kind of admission carries real weight, and it makes their onscreen chemistry as Peter and MJ feel even more lived in. Now that Holland has put it in his own words, does this change how you’ll watch Peter Parker and MJ’s story play out when ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ finally hits theaters?
