Tom Holland Reveals How Marvel Caught Him Drinking Before The Robert Downey Jr. Audition That Changed His Life

Tom Holland’s sobriety has quietly become one of the defining threads of his 2026 press run, and the timing makes sense. With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ set to hit theaters this summer, the actor has found himself back in the spotlight, except this time the conversation keeps circling back to drinking rather than spoilers. It is a noticeably different posture for an actor who spent years keeping that part of his story out of public view.

That shift was on full display earlier this month when Holland sat down with Amy Poehler on her show alongside former co-star Jacob Batalon. He opened up about deciding to quit alcohol in January 2022 and admitted the first year of sobriety was the toughest challenge he had ever faced. Speaking on Good Hang with Amy Poehler, Holland said simply that he quit drinking because he had a problem, one that was affecting both his career and his personal life.

That same wave of honesty is what pulled an older, sharper story back into the spotlight this week. A post from X account Percy resurfaced comments Holland made about the night before his very first screen test opposite Robert Downey Jr, the audition that effectively launched his run as Spider-Man. In his own words, he polished off the hotel minibar the night before meeting Downey, and Marvel found out about it.

According to the post, Holland recalled the studio later admitting they already knew, because they had simply called the hotel to check. He described the realization with blunt embarrassment, the kind of gut check that sticks with someone years into a career built on playing a hero who never seems to slip up.

Robert Downey Jr, who has spoken for years about his own history with addiction, has reportedly remained a steady source of support for Holland as he worked through sobriety, with the two staying close ever since ‘Captain America: Civil War.’ That bond gives the minibar story an added layer, since the man who quietly caught him slipping became the one who later understood it best.

Holland has told a fuller version of his drinking history elsewhere too. He once told Rich Roll that he used to feel like he could not speak to anyone at parties until he was drunk, and that he has since grown out of needing alcohol to feel like himself. That period eventually pushed him to launch Bero, his non-alcoholic beer brand, in October 2024. He has since added a new alcohol free shandy to the lineup, inspired by his partner Zendaya, who has never been much of a drinker herself.

Holland is now weeks away from ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ arriving on July 31, with Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ also on the horizon. It is a strange full circle moment for an actor once terrified of what Marvel might quietly find out about him, now choosing to tell the minibar story himself. Does the moment make Holland’s sobriety journey feel more real to you, or does the timing right before his next Spider-Man release have you raising an eyebrow?
