Behind the polish of the red carpet, Holland has also opened up about how intimidating the shoot actually was. ‘The Odyssey’ is the first feature film ever shot entirely using IMAX cameras, and Holland has explained he had no idea the film magazine only ran for three minutes at a time, meaning Nolan had to call cut far more often than he was used to. He recalled turning to co-star Jon Bernthal in confusion, convinced the constant stopping meant Nolan simply disliked what they were doing, until the film’s stunt coordinator stepped in to clear up the misunderstanding.

Despite that rocky start, Holland has since called the shoot the best experience he has had on a film set, praising both Nolan and producer Emma Thomas for how they ran the production. That kind of ambition tracks with everything surrounding this release. Expectations are running high ahead of the film’s July 17 release, with the story following Damon’s Odysseus as he battles to make his way home to wife Penelope and son Telemachus.

The London premiere is projected to help push the film toward an opening somewhere between 80 and 100 million dollars domestically once it lands in North American theaters, a massive number for a literary epic riding almost entirely on star power and scale. With Holland’s earnest honesty about feeling out of his depth now part of the film’s rollout narrative, it adds an unexpectedly human layer to a production built on spectacle.
