Tracking Every Major Death Across Netflix’s ‘Outer Banks,’ From Season 1 To The Season 4 Finale

‘Outer Banks’ has built its reputation on treasure maps, teenage romance, and a coastal setting that looks like a permanent vacation. Underneath that sunny surface, though, the Netflix drama has quietly become one of the platform’s more lethal young adult series.

Four seasons in, the body count attached to the Pogues’ adventures has grown substantial, and with a fifth and final season on the way, it is worth looking back at exactly who has not survived the hunt for gold.

Early Deaths in ‘Outer Banks’ Seasons 1 and 2

The show signaled its willingness to kill off significant characters almost immediately, and that pattern only intensified as the mysteries around Big John Routledge’s disappearance and the Royal Merchant treasure deepened. Ward Cameron eventually took the blame for two deaths tied to that early mythology, John B’s father and Sheriff Peterkin, even though the truth of what actually happened was more complicated than the official story suggested.

Rather than face consequences for those events, Ward staged an elaborate boat explosion to fake his own death at the close of season two. That fabricated demise sent his daughter Sarah into a tailspin and pushed her back toward her ex boyfriend Topper Thornton, reshuffling the show’s central romantic dynamics heading into season three.

The early seasons also introduced the idea that violence in Kildare rarely stays contained to one storyline. A death connected to one character’s secret almost always rippled outward, complicating alliances between the Pogues and the wealthy Kooks and setting the tone for the increasingly high stakes that followed.

The Season 3 Deaths of Ward Cameron and Big John

Season three delivered what fans consider the show’s first true gut punch, killing off two prominent figures within the same finale. Several characters met their end throughout the season, including Portis, Tommy Sowell, Ryan, villain Carlos Singh, and a handful of his hired smugglers, but the deaths of Ward and Big John Routledge carried the most weight for the main cast.

Ward’s death this time was permanent, and it arrived in a moment the show framed as unexpectedly honorable given his history of self serving decisions. Big John, meanwhile, was killed by Carlos Singh in the season finale while keeping watch above the cave that held the long lost city of El Dorado, dying just as his son John B finally uncovered the treasure his father had spent years chasing.

Those losses gave the Pogues their long awaited payday, but the emotional cost was steep, particularly for John B and Sarah. The wealth from El Dorado set up the group’s next chapter, one that would supposedly let them settle down, though ‘Outer Banks’ rarely lets its characters enjoy peace for long.

Every Death in ‘Outer Banks’ season 4

Season four turned out to be the deadliest stretch in the show’s history, driven almost entirely by one man, Chandler Groff. According to Netflix’s Tudum, the season features at least five victims shown on screen or in flashbacks, including mercenary Omar, wealthy financier Wes Genrette, Larissa Genrette, Hollis Robinson, and ultimately JJ Maybank.

Wes Genrette, who initially appeared to be an ally helping the Pogues manage their El Dorado fortune, was found dead early in the season after hiring the group to track down an amulet connected to Blackbeard. His death set off a mystery that eventually tied back to Groff, revealed as the season’s true villain and JJ’s biological father.

The back half of the season introduced Terrance, Cleo’s father figure, who returned only to sacrifice himself protecting her from the mercenary Lightner during a hostage standoff over Blackbeard’s amulet. Cleo’s grief over Terrance later drove her to confront Lightner in Morocco, where Pope ultimately shot and killed him in self defense after Lightner wounded Cleo, a moment the show has flagged as a thread likely to resurface in season five.

None of those deaths, however, compare to what happens to JJ Maybank in the finale. After trading the Blue Crown to save Kiara’s life, JJ is stabbed by Groff anyway, left to die in Kiara’s arms while reassuring her that his wishes had already come true.

JJ Maybank’s Death and Its Impact on Season 5

JJ’s death has been widely described as the most devastating loss in the series to date, and the reaction from fans reflects that. Much of the emotional weight comes from how the show had spent seasons building JJ’s bond with John B and his slow burn romance with Kiara, only to cut it short in the most brutal way Groff could manage.

‘Outer Banks’ was renewed for a fifth and final season shortly before the second half of season four premiered, with creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke confirming the show would wrap its story after five seasons as originally planned. That renewal was first reported as an exclusive by Deadline ahead of the season four part two premiere.

The upcoming final season is expected to center on Kiara and Cleo as the group processes JJ’s murder and moves to reclaim the Blue Crown from Groff. Filming was expected to run through the end of 2025, with Netflix confirming the series will return sometime in 2026 to close out the Pogues’ story for good.

Given how much loss the group has already endured, from Big John and Ward Cameron to JJ himself, it is fair to wonder just how many Pogues will actually make it to the finish line, and fans are likely to have plenty to say about who they think Groff comes for next.
