Few filmmakers have built a career quite like Uwe Boll, whose name has spent two decades tied to a very specific kind of infamy. Boll is best known for a string of widely mocked video game adaptations during the 2000s, including ‘BloodRayne,’ ‘Alone in the Dark,’ and ‘Far Cry.’ For years, the traffic between his films and gaming only ran one direction.

German developer Polygon Art is behind the project, and a trailer showcasing first person shooter gameplay dropped on July 6, revealing graphics somewhere between the PS2 and PS3 era.

The game leans hard into the same violent territory that made the movie infamous. The official PlayStation Store description casts players as Sanders, someone who decides to take justice into his own hands, hunt down criminals, and uncover corruption, with the tagline warning that some will call him a hero and others a threat. The game promises brutal, fast paced action combat alongside gritty, violent gameplay with gore and dismemberment, and a story driven vigilante experience. There will reportedly be a story driven action campaign with eight varied missions spread across a large city, plus vehicle gameplay and an original soundtrack pulled from the film itself.

The film’s road to this point has been anything but ordinary. ‘Citizen Vigilante’ received overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics who criticized its plot, execution, and anti immigrant message, yet it became the number one purchase on both the Apple TV Store and Amazon Prime Video after its streaming release. In Germany, the film failed to receive an age rating in its first two reviews from the FSK, which meant it could not be shown in theaters or sold in most stores there.

That ban only fueled more attention once Elon Musk got involved. Musk and Boll released the entire film on X for free, where it streamed for 48 hours before an international distribution deal followed.
