In Game of Thrones, we followed Daenerys Targaryen and her three dragons Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal. The largest of Danny’s dragons Drogon was said to be the reincarnation of the biggest and most powerful dragon that ever lived, Balerion the Black Dread. But how would Drogon stack up against some other dragons from Targaryen history? More specifically, one dragon that is set to appear in the House of the Dragon – Vermithor. Both dragons were large and both were strong. Fans couldn’t help but wonder when it comes to Vermithor vs. Drogon, who is bigger and stronger?
Vermithor was larger than Drogon simply due to the fact that he was older. Since dragons grow as long as they live, being near 100 years old would give him quite the size advantage over Drogon. When it comes to strength, by all means, Vermithor should be stronger as well since he is bigger. But Drogon was described as the reincarnation of Balerion the Black Dread, and his flames were described as especially potent. That might give him some advantage over the older and stronger dragon.
As you can see the answer is not as clear as we had hoped so. While Drogon is still a young and inexperienced dragon, the fact alone that he is known as Balerion reincarnated carries great meaning. If you’re interested in how Balerion and Vermithor would match up against each other, keep reading!
Vermithor vs. Drogon: size comparison
For a short while, Vermithor was known as the largest living tamed dragon in existence. He inherited the honor after Vhagar was killed during the Battle Battle Above the Gods Eye.
Since Verminthor was nearly 100 years old during the Dance of the Dragons it makes sense that he was such a large dragon. Dragons grow as long as they live while they are provided with freedom and food, that is one of the reasons Vhagar managed to grow to such a large size. She simply lived long enough to come close to Balerion’s size.
On the other hand, Drogon, the last living dragon, was a young dragon, and even though it was claimed that his wingspan was twenty feet from tip to tip. We don’t have a reference point concerning other, older dragons. Drogon was approximately 7 or 8 years and while he was described as a large dragon indeed it makes no sense for him to surpass a dragon that had more than 90 years to outgrow him. Drogon simply did not have enough time to grow anywhere near Vermithor.
Vermithor vs. Drogon: strenght comparison
Nothing about Vermithor’s combat prowess is explicitly said, only that he was a fearsome and large dragon. After Jaehaerys I Targaryen died, Vermithors last rider, the dragon was left alone and unclaimed for many years. It wasn’t that no one tried to claim him, he simply would take none of them. In Fire & Blood, Vermithor eventually bent his neck to a dragonseed, a blacksmith’s bastard called Hugh Hammer.
Hugh Hammer was first allied with Rhaenyra, he eventually decided to join the Greens, and that eventually led to his downfall, as well as Vermithor’s downfall.
They were ambushed near Tumbleton. Hugh Hammer was killed before he even had the chance to mount Vermithor. Vermithor crazed with anger started burning everyone around him. Seasmoke, another powerful dragon crashed into him. Two dragons fell to the ground and continued fighting. Vermithor would have killed Seasmoke without trouble if Tessarion, one much younger dragon hadn’t intervened.
In the end, Vermithor managed to rip Seasmoke’s throat out. But both succumbed to the injuries. Tessarion was eventually mercy-killed due to her sustained injuries.
As we’ve said before even though nothing explicit was said about Vermithor’s strength, no weak dragon can hold his ground against two other dragons.
Drogon on the other hand was probably smaller, and due to that probably weaker physically. What Drogon had going for him was the fact that he was awfully similar to Balerion the Black dread. In fact, he was even considered to be Balerion incarnated.
Drogon’s powers have been described to some extent, we know that he was a pitch-black dragon, with dragonfire potent enough that could be felt from thirty feet away. He had long teeth and we even witnessed some of his destructive abilities in the show. If by some chance Drogon managed to inherit some of Drogon’s powers and strength. He would be perhaps among the strongest dragons that ever lived.
If it comes to the battle of experience, I have no doubts that Vermithor would have swept the floor with Drogon, simply by being an older and more experienced dragon.
Some conflicting statements from the books keep us from giving you a definitive answer to this question, and everything stated above is speculative in nature. Drogon seemed to be growing quite faster than the dragons from Fire and Blood.
But with everything said, due to his age alone we can only assume that Vermithor was both larger and stronger than Drogon.
