‘VisionQuest’ Star James Spader Reveals Ultron Has Been Hiding Inside Vision’s Mind This Entire Time

Marvel fans have spent over a decade assuming Ultron’s story ended the moment Vision seemingly destroyed him at the close of 2015’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’ That confrontation happened off-screen, leaving just enough ambiguity for eagle-eyed fans to keep theorizing about whether the villain truly met his end that day.

Those lingering questions are finally being answered with ‘VisionQuest,‘ Marvel Television’s upcoming Disney+ series that reunites Paul Bettany’s Vision with James Spader’s Ultron for the first time since that fateful showdown. The show, created by ‘Star Trek: Picard’ veteran Terry Matalas, was officially unveiled at D23 on August 15, with Spader and Bettany joining Kevin Feige on stage to confirm what the trailer had only hinted at.

According to Spader, Ultron never actually died at all; he’s simply been trapped inside Vision’s mind for the past eleven years, quietly observing everything happening in the world around him. Speaking alongside Bettany in an interview with Fandango, Spader described just how much access Ultron has had during that time.

“He’s had access to the internet, television, history, and he’s just been consuming, and he’s been painting,” Spader said, offering fans their first real glimpse into what Ultron has been doing during his years of confinement. The idea of Ultron developing a painting habit while trapped inside Vision’s consciousness adds an unexpectedly human wrinkle to a villain originally built entirely around cold, calculated logic.

That detail lines up with Bettany’s own description of Vision’s mind in a separate conversation with Collider, where he explained that Vision has essentially been saving and running multiple AI programs behind the scenes, JARVIS and FRIDAY among them, alongside one particularly dangerous presence he described as needing to be kept “behind a pretty impressive firewall because he’s a psychopath. But he’s a clever one.” While Bettany didn’t name Ultron directly in that comment, the show has since confirmed Ultron is indeed one of the personas living inside Vision’s programming.

Visually, this version of Ultron looks nothing like the fully robotic menace fans remember from ‘Age of Ultron.’ The ‘VisionQuest’ trailer reveals a human-machine hybrid version of the character, complete with gray hair, a beard, and glasses, marking the first time Spader has appeared as Ultron in the flesh rather than solely through voice and motion capture work.

That transformation ties directly into the show’s larger premise, which follows Vision navigating a fractured, mind-palace-like existence following the events of ‘WandaVision.’ With Ultron now positioned as one of several AI consciousnesses Vision has been quietly containing, the series appears set to explore a much more introspective, psychologically driven conflict than the action-heavy showdown fans saw in 2015.

‘VisionQuest’ is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 14, marking Spader’s first television role since wrapping his ten-season run on ‘The Blacklist’ in 2023. For a character many assumed had been permanently written out of the MCU, Ultron’s return as a painting, internet-consuming presence hiding in plain sight inside his own creation’s mind might be one of the more unexpected twists Marvel has pulled off in years.
