During this year, following the negative impact of the pandemic of COVID-19 on the movie industry, Warner Bros. released all of its major movies in theaters and on HBOMax simultaneously, trying to prevent further delays, and to give the audience a chance to see the movies regardless if they can or cannot visit theaters.

But, regardless of best intentions, this strategy of releasing movies wasn’t very successful for WarnerMedia. Not only that most of the movies were box office disappointments, even for the current pandemic era standards, but considering HBOMax still isn’t available in most of the world, WB decided to abandon this strategy for 2022.

Earlier this year, after Disney released Black Widow and Jungle Cruise in theaters and on Disney+ simultaneously, they saw that wasn’t the right approach. Starting with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Disney decided to release the movie in theaters, and give it a 45-day theatrical release window before launching the movie on the streaming service.

According to WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar, WB will try to use the same strategy during the next year. Kilar didn’t specify if that strategy will apply to all of their upcoming movies, but he confirmed that fans can expect the upcoming DC movie The Batman on HBOMax on the 46th day after its premiere in theaters. Since The Batman will premiere in theaters on March 4, that means we can expect it on the streaming service around April 19, 2022.

“Think about when movies would show up on HBO, which is eight to nine months after theatrical premiere. The Batman is going to show up on day 46 on HBO Max. That is a huge change from where things were in 2018, 2017, 2016.” — Jason Kilar for Vox’s Recode

Directed by Matt Reeves, and starring Robert Pattinson in the titular role, The Batman will premiere exclusively in theaters on March 4, 2022.
