What House Was Hagrid in Before He Got Expelled?

Rubeus Hagrid is a character from the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling, working in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as the Keeper of Keys and Grounds. Fans might know that Hagrid attended Hogwarts when he was younger, but they might not know what house was Hagrid in?

Hagrid was in Gryffindor before he wrongfully got expelled from Hogwarts, being framed by Tom Riddle. While the fact was never explicitly stated in the books nor the movies, the author confirmed it in an interview in 2000.

However, some fans reiterated that they believe Hagrid was actually in Slytherin, as they found some insinuations in the books that could point in that direction. Regardless of what we choose to believe, the facts remain the same – Hagrid was in Gryffindor before being expelled, as Rowling confirmed.

What House Was Hagrid In Before He Was Expelled?

Over the seven Harry Potter books and eight movies, not once do we hear about what house Hagrid was in during his time in Hogwarts. We don’t even get too much about his time as a student, other than getting expelled in his third year. While he did break some rules, he was actually framed into being expelled.

As we learn in the Chamber of Secrets, Tom Marvolo Riddle was a fifth-year prefect in Slytherin at the time. He and Hagrid knew each other, and Riddle knew that Rubeus had a huge affinity for creatures.

At the same time, the Heir of Slytherin opened the Chamber of Secrets, releasing a monster that terrorized Hogwarts. When Marvolo learns that Hagrid is keeping an acromantula, Aragog, in the dungeons, he accuses him of opening the Chamber and releasing the monster out.

Hagrid got expelled from the school, while Aragog fled to the Dark Forest. It was only later revealed that Aragog and Hagrid were never responsible for the attacks – it was Riddle who opened the Chamber.

Aragog was a gigantic, intelligent spider capable of speech – he revealed that the creature from the chamber is no spider but rather something spiders dread the most. We learn that it was a basilisk, a giant snake with yellow eyes whose gaze can kill you on the spot.

The interaction between Tom and Rubeus, when Tom caught Rubeus in the dungeons talking to Aragog, was on a first-name basis, which is the main reason why some fans believe Hagrid was actually in Slytherin. Because, how could a third-year Griffindor be on a first-name basis with a fifth-year Slytherin perfect?

Well, if you think about it, it’s not that weird. Riddle had a reputation to begin with, and Hagrid is literally a half-giant. Everybody in school probably knew who he was after the first dinner in the first year, seeing him tower over everybody in the hall.

Plus, Riddle was a prefect, meaning he roamed the hallways a lot when other students had to remain in their common rooms. Hagrid had a lot of creatures to take care of and would probably often sneak around a lot. Perhaps Tom could’ve met him that way, and instead of reprimanding him, used him as a scapegoat for his undoings.

My point is, there are countless ways they could’ve gotten to a first-name basis in three years in the same school. It might’ve been up for debate if Rowling never addressed it, but seeing that she stated Hagrid was in Gryffindor before his expulsion, I don’t see why we’d try to dispute her.
