When Will Jessica Jones Be In The MCU?
Recently, there were many rumors about the Marvel characters from the Netflix shows returning to the larger MCU, including Jessica Jones. The fan-favorite superhero has been trending on Twitter for a few days now, as rumors about her potential return resurfaced. So, when will Jessica Jones be in the MCU?
Jessica Jones hasn’t been confirmed to return to the MCU, but many rumors suggest we’ll see her back in the mix very soon. Her first appearance will likely come in the She-Hulk series, but other possibilities are opened, too, such as Moon Knight or even Hawkeye Season 2.
Of course, it’s uncertain if Hawkeye will even have a second season, or will Kate Bishop appear in other MCU movies, but after Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the Kingpin’s appearance in Hawkeye Season 1, it seems like it’s only a matter of time before Jess reappears, too. Let’s dig in to see when and how it could happen.
Is Jessica Jones Series In The MCU?
First things first, let’s get our facts out of the way – Jessica Jones series, as well as Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Punisher, and The Defenders – are all in the MCU.
That is, they are all a part of the same universe. We learn that several times throughout the series, especially The Defenders, where they’ve referenced the Battle of New York a couple of times. For those who don’t know, or don’t remember, the Battle of New York happened in the first Avengers movie, where Loki invaded with an army of Chitauri.
Also, there have been situations where they referenced the “green one,” clearly referring to the Hulk, aka Bruce Banner.
So, yes, the Marvel Netflix shows were a part of the MCU universe – they just operated in their smaller, contained New York City environment. Whether the characters will be introduced into the larges scheme of the MCU remains to be seen.
After Daredevil and Kingpin already reappearing, as well as Marvel and Disney reclaiming the rights for other characters, it seems like it’s only a matter of time.
Will Jessica Jones Be Introduced Into The MCU?
With all the rumors going around, it’s hard to say which are true and which aren’t. So, will Jessica Jones ever get her introduction into the larger MCU? Well, many hints suggest that it will happen, and it could happen soon.
First of all, Marvel and Disney have reclaimed the rights to many characters, including the entire Defenders team. And according to one of the chief MCU executives, Kevin Feige, it opens up a huge array of possibilities for great storytelling. Here’s what he said in a recent interview with Screen Rant:
“I always say that whenever a character comes back into the Marvel sandbox, it becomes another tool in the storytelling ability of the MCU. As I said before, the good news is, all will be revealed when people actually finally watch.”
Sure, that doesn’t tell much, and Feige rarely reveals their true intentions – he only drops a nugget like this one, lets the rumors spread, and then, when we actually see the rumors turn out to be true or false, we’re surprised and thrilled either way.
This tells us there’s a big interest in bringing Jessica Jones and other Defenders back into the mix. Marvel is exploring the ground and seeing if there’s interest from the fans – and, seeing that Jessica Jones is trending again after mere speculation about her return, I think it’s safe to say that there IS a lot of interest.
Also, we can’t ignore the fact that we’ve already seen two characters from the Marvel Netflix collaboration return to the larger MCU – Charlie Cox reprised his Matt Murdock role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, while Vincent D’Onofrio came back as Kingpin in Hawkeye – and, both will likely reappear in the spin-off series, Echo.
On top of it all, the Jessica Jones actress, Krysten Ritter, is all-in for a Jess return to the MCU. As she said in an interview with Comic Book:
“I absolutely love Jessica more than anything. And I loved those years playing her. If there was ever an opportunity for her to pop up anywhere, I would be the first [to say yes]. I may or may not have the jacket ready to go in my closet. So, you never know, but if I ever had the opportunity to play her again, I would be so thrilled.”
The fans seem to share her enthusiasm, but if we were to believe countless Internet rumors, it seems that Marvel Studios thought about recasting Jess if she were to return to the MCU. Well, they better not if they want to keep the fanbase happy.
When Will Jessica Jones Be In The MCU?
Let’s say the rumors are true and that Jessica Jones is set to appear in the larger MCU. When will that be?
Well, most fans believe it will happen very soon – most likely in the She-Hulk TV series, which is set to premiere somewhere in late 2022. It would make sense – Tatsiana Maslany will portray Jennifer Walters, Bruce Banner’s cousin, who ends up with the same condition he has. But, instead of being a scientist like Bruce, Jennifer is a high-class lawyer.
It’s easy to see how Jess and Jen could cooperate – while one works as a lawyer, the other is a private investigator, so their jobs basically go hand-in-hand. Also, it would only make the female-driven show even stronger, and I sincerely hope we’ll see these two awesome, layered characters co-exist in the same show.
Another possibility arising is the upcoming Moon Knight series. While Marc Spector and Jessica Jones don’t have that much in common in the comics, one could see them working together in the show.
Moon Knight is a dark, grim, unstable character and usually works as a street-level vigilante – all the traits that Jess has herself. Marc could certainly use her street-smarts and investigative skills to get to the bottom of his condition because, according to the trailer – he doesn’t quite remember who he is.
I would also love to see Jessica Jones in the second season of Hawkeye if it ever came to fruition. More recent Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye comics have Jess as somewhat of her mentor figure, helping her and guiding her through the superhero life.
However, Kate is more likely to reappear in movies than in another season of the Hawkeye TV series. Also, she already had a mentor figure in Clint Barton and has a second dark-but-funny character by her side in Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova. It’s hard to see Jessica Jones jumping into the mix, but it’s not impossible.
Finally, it’s been confirmed that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will break the Avengers: Endgame record for most Marvel characters appearing in one feature film. Seeing that film’s tone will be dark, twisted, and almost horror-esque, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to have Jones in the huge mix of characters. The tone would certainly go up her alley.
However, Jess is usually more of a street-level hero, not operating on the universal scale that often, let alone multiversal. Appearing in the Multiverse of Madness, battling cosmic beings like Shuma-Gorath wouldn’t be something that Jessica Jones fans are accustomed to, but who knows? Maybe Marvel could find a way to make it work.
Whatever it is, and whenever Jessica Jones comes into the MCU, we’ll welcome her with opened arms – as long as it’s Krysten Ritter, am I right?
