Zach Cregger’s new ‘Resident Evil’ movie opened in U.S. theaters on September 18 through Sony Pictures Releasing. Viewers who skipped the theatrical run, or who simply want to see it again, now have a clearer picture of when the film will reach their living rooms. Home release plans for Sony titles are rarely as predictable as those from other studios, so the details matter.

The new ‘Resident Evil’ movie is the eighth live action entry in the franchise and a reboot, written by Cregger and Shay Hatten. A report published on October 10 states that the film will be available on digital platforms on November 3. Subscription streaming is a separate question, and the answer is less settled.

The ‘Resident Evil’ Digital Release Date

The film is set to be available to buy or rent on digital HD platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu and Google Play Movies starting November 3. That gives viewers a little over six weeks between the theatrical opening and the first at home option.

Earlier projections were spread across a wider window. Some outlets pointed to mid October, using the release pattern of another Sony title as a guide. Tom’s Guide instead expected early to mid November, noting that Sony tends to move to digital a little more slowly than some studios. The reported date falls neatly inside the later of those two estimates.

Preorders had already appeared on several major platforms, including Apple TV and Fandango at Home, at a price of $25. Those listings did not carry a release date at first, which is why the November report is the clearest signal so far.

‘Resident Evil’ Streaming on Netflix

Sony does not operate its own streaming service, so its theatrical films go to Netflix, which holds the exclusive first run streaming rights to Sony movies in the U.S. That means the film is expected to settle there once the digital and disc windows have passed.

The timing is where estimates diverge. Recent Sony releases have taken roughly 90 to 120 days to reach Netflix, which would point to January, with February not out of the question. Fandomwire also named mid to late January as the strongest estimate, while stressing that it is a prediction rather than a firm date. Other outlets had floated mid December based on a shorter gap.

None of this is official yet. Neither Sony nor Netflix has announced a streaming date. Readers in France face a longer wait, since local rules keep theatrical releases off Netflix for 15 months.

Blu-ray and 4K Physical Release Plans

Collectors do not appear to be left out of the picture. Sony typically releases its films on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD within a couple of months of the theatrical debut, often around the same time as the digital release. A disc release in November or December looks likely, though no physical date has been confirmed.

Preorders are live at Walmart and Amazon for Blu-ray and DVD editions, along with a special edition 4K UHD steelbook, and each of those includes a digital copy. Amazon’s listing identifies Sony Pictures Home Entertainment as the studio and gives the film a runtime of two hours.

For anyone who has avoided spoilers, the listing describes a story that follows Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier who is pulled into a desperate race for survival as one terrifying night falls apart around him. That outline matches what the early home release coverage has emphasized about the film’s tone.

Box Office Run Behind the Home Release Timeline

The strength of the theatrical run helps explain why Sony may be taking its time. The film has grossed $320.3 million, making it the highest grossing entry in the franchise. That figure also marks a clear change from the earlier reboot, which earned $42 million at the box office.

The opening weekend brought in around $60 million domestically, the biggest debut of Cregger’s career and of the franchise. Pocket Lint noted that the result exceeded Sony’s initial projections and all but guaranteed a long theatrical run, likely through the end of October. A film still earning in theaters tends to delay cheaper at home options, and a November digital date fits that logic.

Critical response has been just as supportive. Nintendo Life described the film as already the highest rated video game movie ever, which gives curious viewers another reason to check it out. With the digital date reported for November 3 and Netflix likely months away, will you rent or buy Cregger’s version of ‘Resident Evil’ right away, or hold out for the streaming debut to see whether the franchise’s biggest hit holds up on a second viewing at home?
