The time skip between episodes 5 and 6 of House of the Dragon allowed the kids of Alicent Hightower and Rhaenyra Targaryen to grow up, as they would eventually play integral parts in the upcoming Targaryen civil war. But the most important of those kids is Aegon II, who is the firstborn son of Viserys to Alicent. That means that, normally, he should be the heir to the Iron Throne. So, who is Aegon II Targaryen in House of the Dragon?
Aegon II Targaryen is the first son of Viserys Targaryen to Alicent Hightower and is the one who is most capable of challenging Princess Rhaenyra for the Iron Throne. In the series, the younger teenage version of Aegon II is played by David Tennant’s son named, Ty Tennant.
At this point, people should keep a close eye on Aegon II because of the fact that, as Alicent herself mentioned, he is the biggest challenge to Princess Rhaenyra’s status as the heir to the Iron Throne. Of course, that fact is one of the things that are going to help move the storyline forward, especially once the Dance of the Dragons commences.
Who Is Aegon II Targaryen In House Of The Dragon?
It was already clear before the release of House of the Dragon that the series would follow a storyline with a lot of time skips because of how the events that occurred more than a decade before the actual Targaryen civil war is important to the progression of the story. In that regard, it took a while for us to meet some of the most important characters in their more mature roles, and one such character is Aegon II Targaryen.
Of course, this isn’t the first time we met Aegon II because we met him as early as episode 3 when he was already on his second-name day (birthday). However, he was still just a very young child before the massive ten-year time skip from episodes 5 to 6, as it was only now that we got to meet a more mature teenage version of Aegon II.
Aegon II is the oldest son of King Viserys Targaryen to Queen Alicent Hightower and is the younger half-brother of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. As such, he should have been the heir to the Iron Throne had Viserys not named Rhaenyra his heir before the boy’s birth.
In the events of episode 6, we met Aegon II as a boy in his younger teenage years as he was training and growing up alongside Aemond, Jacaerys, and Lucerys. Nevertheless, the young Aegon II was already quite pompous for his age, as he loved to boast about his skills and was even quite the troublemaker because he went on to play a prank on Aemond, his younger brother. He was also shown masturbating out in the window of his chambers, as it was clear that he was never a very kingly prince in the series.
What Is Aegon II’s Role In House Of The Dragon?
In House of the Dragon, Aegon II seems like a regular teenage boy that was born into privilege as he loved making fun of the people around him while also boasting about his skills as a swordsman (even though he isn’t really the best). He even masturbated out on his window while looking at King’s Landing, as it was clear that he was not entirely right in the head in terms of his overall demeanor. And he even made it a point to bully the younger and smaller Jace in their training session as Ser Criston Cole was coaching him.
However, Aegon II’s biggest role was revealed by Queen Alicent, who had a grudge against Princess Rhaenyra and wishes nothing but to destroy her former friend. She revealed to Aegon II that he should never stay too close to Rhaenyra’s children because he was a threat to her reign and that his life could be in danger once the heir sat on the Iron Throne. Rhaenyra would want to get rid of all of the challenges to her rule, and that was what Aegon II represented to her because he was the oldest male son of King Viserys.
There’s also the fact that Alicent Hightower seems to see Aegon II as the biggest chess piece in her own game. Again, Alicent would want nothing more than to see Rhaenyra falling out of grace, and that’s why she wants to use Aegon II as her way to take the Iron Throne away from Rhaenyra. She said it herself when she told her son that he would become king one day because the people of the Seven Kingdoms would want him as their king.
So, while Aegon II may be the one who has the biggest claim to the Iron Throne other than Rhaenyra, he isn’t the one that necessarily wants to see himself becoming king. Instead, it is Alicent who wants to see Aegon II becoming king because it is the only way for her to keep the throne away from Rhaenyra.
From what we’ve seen from Aegon II, he seemed to have accepted the fact that his older sister would be the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. But that’s not something that his mother wants to happen, as Alicent will eventually find a way to install Aegon II on the Iron Throne. And it is that fact that will eventually lead to the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, which history states is a war between Rhaenyra and Aegon II but is more of a war between the princess and the queen.
Who Plays The Young Aegon II?
The young Aegon II Targaryen is actually portrayed by Ty Tennant, whose name should be quite familiar to a lot of people. That’s because he is the son of David Tennant, who is widely known as the tenth Doctor in the hit TV series Doctor Who. That means that we have two characters who have either played the Doctor or are related to one. For those who may have forgotten, Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen) once played the Doctor as well.
But while Ty Tennant may be the son of the incredibly popular David Tennant, he has steadily carved his name in the world of showbusiness as well. Ty’s first real acting role came in 2019 when he appeared in the Tolkien biopic. He also became a regular in the War of the Worlds sci-fi series that premiered in 2019. In that regard, he isn’t a stranger to acting despite his young age.
It is worth noting that Ty Tennant won’t be staying in House of the Dragon too long. Like how Milly Alcock had to cede the role of Rhaenyra to Emma D’Arcy, Ty Tennant will cede the role of Aegon II to Tom Glynn-Carney once the character grows to become an adult.
