Who Is Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Brother? Meet Owen Lars

One of the things that we know about the Jedi in Star Wars is that they had seemingly forsaken all ties to their old lives before they joined the Jedi Order. In that regard, Obi-Wan Kenobi, for instance, has a backstory that is seemingly a mystery because, like almost all Jedi, his family background was never truly explored. Then again, in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, there seemed to be an indication that Obi-Wan had a brother before he was taken to the Jedi Temple. So, who is Obi-Wan Kenobi’s brother?

It is rumored that Owen Lars is the long-lost brother of Obi-Wan Kenobi. For those who may have forgotten, Owen is Anakin’s brother by virtue of their parents’ marriage. Owen is also the uncle of Luke Skywalker and was the one who was responsible for raising him after Order 66.

The rumors of Owen being Obi-Wan’s brother stems from a screenplay that was scrapped years ago. In that regard, there is no confirmation whether or not Owen and Obi-Wan are indeed brothers. Still, there were indications in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series that may point to the possibility of this being a reality. So, with that said, let’s look at whether or not Owen is actually Obi-Wan’s brother.

Does Obi-Wan Kenobi Have A Brother?

If there’s one thing that we know about the different Jedi that we’ve seen in Star Wars, it’s that they hardly ever talk about their families due to the fact that the Jedi need to separate themselves from all of their attachments from the world. In that regard, their focus lies on their role as the protectors of the galaxy and keepers of the peace.

As such, despite the fact that he has been in almost all of the Star Wars movies and animated shows, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s background before he became a Jedi is still quite a mystery as we hardly know anything about the man or his past (except for the fact that he once fell in love with a Mandalorian). Nevertheless, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series allowed us to learn more about the character on a deeper level.

In the third episode of that series, Obi-Wan talked about something he remembered from his past. However, he did admit that his life before he became a Jedi was seemingly a blur already. When Leia asked him what it was like being a Jedi, he said it wasn’t easy because he was taken from his family quite early so he could train as a Jedi. And because of that, he barely remembers his own family at all.

Obi-Wan said that he had glimpses of the past as he remembered a few details about his parents. But he also said that he has a memory of a baby and that he believes that he did have a baby brother before he was taken to the Jedi Temple to train as a Jedi. Nevertheless, Obi-Wan can’t remember who his brother was or if he did indeed have a brother. He probably no longer remembers his parents.

Nevertheless, the possibility of him having a brother is still up in the air, as this was neither confirmed nor denied. That means that there might be someone out there who is related to Obi-Wan Kenobi. But who could his brother be?

Where Do Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon Jinn Go After The Kenobi Finale?

In the Star Wars franchise, Kenobi’s brother was never mentioned at all. But the thing is that there are clues that point to the possibility that one familiar person could be his brother. And we are talking about Owen Lars.

The rumors of Owen being Obi-Wan’s brother stems from the fact that the original Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi screenplay says that Obi-Wan and Owen Lars were actually brothers. But this was cut from the screenplay and was never made a reality in the movie.

As such, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Owen Lars could actually be brothers. After all, we did see in the Obi-Wan series that they were both already familiar with one another (considering that Kenobi brought Luke to the Lars family) and that there seems to be some sort of brotherly tension going on between them and Obi-Wan’s involvement in Luke’s life. Of course, they both ended up becoming more civil with one another after Kenobi saved Luke’s life from Reva.

Who Is Owen Lars?

In case you may have forgotten, Owen Lars actually plays a big role in the entire Star Wars franchise, despite the fact that he may not be one of the more popular characters in the storyline. That’s because he was responsible for raising Luke Skywalker as the child’s uncle.

During the events of Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, Owen was revealed to be Anakin’s half-brother due to their parents’ marriage. Then, in Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi brought Luke to the Lars family because they always wanted to have a child but could never conceive. Luke grew up knowing that Owen was his uncle.

However, in Episode IV – A New Hope, the Stormtroopers that were looking for C3PO and R2D2 interrogated and killed the entire Lars family while Luke was away. Nothing but their burnt skeletons remained after the Empire was done with them.

Is Owen Lars Really Obi-Wan’s Brother?

While we did say that Owen being Obi-Wan’s brother, it was never included in the movie, the thing is that this was actually included in the novelization of Return of the Jedi. Still, the important fact that people need to consider is that the novelizations of the first six movies are part of the Legends portion of Star Wars and are not considered canon, especially after Disney acquired Lucasfilm and totally rewrote the canon storyline of Star Wars. So, while the movies may be part of the canon, the novelizations aren’t.

Does Leia Meet Obi-Wan Again After Kenobi’s Final Episode?

Even though Legends isn’t canon in Star Wars, there is still a good possibility that the people behind the Obi-Wan Kenobi series actually adapted the novelization of Episode VI so that people would speculate that Obi-Wan and Owen could actually be brothers. And them not knowing that they were actually related is a great addition to the storyline as Obi-Wan helping out in raising Luke is something that an actual uncle would do for his brother.

As they say, the Force works in mysterious ways, and the Force finding a way to reunite Obi-Wan Kenobi with the brother that he never knew he had is one of the best ways for this mysterious guiding hand to bring balance to the Force as they were both integral to Luke Skywalker’s formation as a heroic figure.
